In a little pamphlet of less than fifty pages, entitled ''Hard times and how to mend them," D.. R. This is an atlractire programme and exceedingly cheap at the price, which is only ten cents. If relief can be afforded for that insiguiGcant sum from the ills which oppress us the cloud should be lifted at once, that the sunlight or prosperity may again pour iu and irradiate the faco of the country. There is reason to fear, hov.-crer, that the cloud is not to be immediately lifted according to pro gramme. The suggestions for indiridual ef fort in the remoral of hard times are excellent, though not new. They are embodied substantially in the two words, frugality and economy, and the admonitiou, iive within your means.' The art of supporting a family in comfort and happiness on nine dol lars a wcei: is admirably set forth, and many a family would profit to the extent of ten times ten cents by a careful consideration of the lesson. But when wc come to the gorern ment side of the question the prob lem becomes more difficult. The "rery simple expedients, costing the country nothing,'' are simple cer tainly, but they will scarcely commend themselves to the intel ligent people of the country. The lint expedient based, on the very just assumption that hard times arc caused by orerproductiou and will mend when consumption orertakes the supply is that the government shall 'step in and destroy the pernicious surplus which is clogging the wheels of trade and commerce." This might involve the purchase of the surnlus. pirospnniTY E"!j" Mhutinthc estimate of the proposer mat aiso can sunpjy ue euecteu oy "printing a certain number of bits of Hiper'aud stamping them legal tend er." "s there a merchant, manufact urer, farmer or mechanic in the Un ion," he asks with fine scorn "who would refuse to receivo them at their face value. Certainly, no one but a fool would think of doing so! llow much then would the people have paid for the expedient by which the hard times had been removed, and commerce and prosperity restored to the nation? Only tlie expense of printing and signinji the notes, and as we could pay for that in the notes themselves, it would not have cost us a single cent: nav .more, we would 1m? richer by 300,(X)0,000 dollars which would go on day by day, reproducing themselves in a housand forms of solid and useful productions. That is the great beauty of a currency it is never idle- not one erson in a thousand is fool enough to hide it away in a corner, it must be kept iu motion and every move it makes it adds to the world's wealth or pleas ure. It is ttt terly unlike any other form of wealth: practically speaking it never loses in value, while all oth er kinds of riches waste and go to de cay.' In its last analysis, therefore, the scheme turns out to be simply infla tion, and an endless infliction of ir redeemable enrrencv. "Whatever charms such a plan might have for an inexperienced nation, the United htales is not likely again to embark in it "Tho burnt child dreads the fire.' A teacher in one of the Altoona schools recently electrified her pupils wno were annoying her with quest ien3: "Children. I am encacred.'' JSoticing the general look of aston ishment she added: "But not to any fool of a man," and the excitement died awav. The New York Tribune says: "There is probably no class of men engaged in any industry who are sub ject to such sufferings, privations and perils as sailors." This will bo a con solation to newspaper men. In tho largest library in tho world, in Paris, there is a Chinese chart of the heavens made about GOO years before Christ. In this chart 1,160 stars are found to be correctly inser ted, as corrobated by the scientists of tho present day. Do Yon Mean Business! Well, if you have strength to push your bnsindss, it is welL But many a man's business has broken down because the man was broken down, and had no push in him. If you want to mako a success, build up your system by the nse of Brown's Iron Bitters. Air. W. al". WinfrPP. of Petersburg, Ya., aays: "There is no raedicime equal to Brown's Iron Bitters for general debility." It cures dyspepsia, enriches the blood and strengthes the muscles. THE PMMhirS II1.V1V.VTH V. Should you ask us why this dunning? Why all these complaints and murmurs? Sad it is to hear the message. When bur funds are all exhausted. When the last greenback has left us, "When tho nickels all havo ranisbed. Gone to pay the toiling printer, Gone to pay the paper-maker, Gone to pay tho landlord's tribute, Gone to pay tho clerk and doril, Gone to pay old Uncle Samuel Uncle Sam the rowdies call him Gone to pay for beef and Bridget, Gone to pay the faithful parson. Sad it is to torn our ledger. Turn tho leares of this old ledger, Turn and see what sums are due u?. Due for rolumes long since ended, Due for years of pleasant reading, Due for years of anxious labor, Duo despite our constant dunning, Due in sums from one to twenty. Would you lift a burden from us? Would you drive a specter from you? Would yon taste a pleasant slumber? AVould you havo a quiet conscience? Would 3-ou read a paper paid for? Send us nionej! Send us money! Send us money! Send us money! Send the money that you owo us. The abolition of tho contract labor system in New York will entail a cost upon the taxpayers, for the Auburn prison alone, of 6100,000 a year. The Utica Herald remarks that "tho luxury of maintaining prisoners in idleness comes high, but the voters said they must have it." Good-bye. rhenmatisn, good-bye; St. Jacobs Oil knocks yon sky high.
