The following is the origin of this , saying: The Ashburton treaty of; 1812 did not define the boundary lino between the United States and the British possessions, and permitted, or rather did not prohibit, the joint oc cupation of Oregon by British and American settlers. For many years that boundary had been a subject of dispnte, as tho country along the Co lumbia river had been claimed by both nations. The American bound ary extended under previous treaties "to tho latitude of 49' north of the equator, and alon" that parallel in-. definitely to tho west' In 1S12 at-! tempts were made and continued to 1816 to settle that boundary. It had been assumed that the United States had a dividing line, made by previous treaty, along the parallel of 51 -10' from the sea to the Rocky monntain. The subject absobed so much atten tion that the Democratic National Convention of ISii, in its platform of principles, declared for that bound ary line of war as the consequence. It became known as the "oi-40 plank," and was a canon of political faith, and was the campaign cry. But, as a matter of fact, the "51-10" finally came down quietly to -19 and no war. A gentleman from Lebanon county, states that the Mongolian pheasants which were turned loose in that sec tion have vfonderfully multiplied. Scores of half-fledged pheasants of this breed are seen almost every day scurrying about over the Albany prairie. These aro tho birds which wero brought from China by Mr. Den ny, formerly United States consul there. A New York state dairymaid has succeeded in milking nine cows in twenty-eight minutes. Oil from Nature's WelLs. The skin on the head is kept soft and flexible by a secretion from tho oil glands. When these are clogged the hair dries and falls off. Parker's Hair Balsam renews their action, re stores tho original color to the hair and makes it soft and glossy. It al so eradicates dandruff. Not greasy, not a dye, deliciously perfumed. De lightful for a lady's toilet table. Tho best of dressings. Preferablo to all similar articles because of its superi or cleanliness and purity.
