Hecent changes in the Union Pacific recall some interesting events con nected with the early history of tho road. The projectors and prompters o this railway across the continent, it will be remembered, never expected to make it a paying enterprise. John B. Alley once said that whoever re garded it as a good investment ''was a fool." Among the numerous "construction" companies, tho head men in which were officers o the road, was ono known as "Davis and Associates," which had an immensely fat contract for furnishing all the ties, bridge timbers and lumber needed from Cheyenne west to Prom ontory. "Davis and Associates" sub let their contract in such a manner as to reserve a princely margin for them selves. "When the worst was completed the Union Pacific was owing "Davis and Associates" $7c0,000, and they in turn were largely indebted to the sub-contractors, ono Christopher Christopher looking after their interests. The latter loudly demanded their money and made it hot for Christopher, who, npon investigation, became convinced mat tno 57oU,000 wa3 kopt back in accordance with an agreement be tween the then vice-president of the road and his partners in tho firm of "Davis and Associates." m Tho scheme was to tiro out all par ties by delay and work the 10-cents-on-the-dollar racket. Christopher saw that his own life would bo in jeopardy if this job was careied out. About this timo Durant, Duff and other directors wero making a tour of inspection over tho road and Christopher oonceived tho idea of stopping their train and holding them as prisoners until they paid tho claim of "Davis and Associates." It wa3 a bold thing to do, but with tho help of a young telegraph operator it was aouo and the train switched off on a sido traok. Christopher went into tho car and explained the position of things. Tho directors made all sorts of promises, but were plainly given to understand that nothing but cash would bo accepted. After forty-eight hours parleying Daraut sent Duff ont with S50.00U, which they had in a safe in tho car, and telegraphed to Omaha for as much more. "When tho S100.000 was uauueu ovor jjurant made more pledges, but tho car was not allowed to proceed. .Tho S50.000 was bor rowed from a Now Yorker riamed "Wilson, who was in the party. Tho cash was taken, but tho captors still refused to let their prisonera go. Fi nally Henry Rogers, a banker at Cheyenne, was sent for, and on his arrival Durant made drafts on New York for $600,000, whioh were paid. Then Davis put in a claim for tho money as trusteo for "Davis and Associates," but Christopher ignored him until ho had paid the sub-contractors in full, when ho handed their receipts and the balance of the money to Davis. "When tho direct ors' car pulled out on its way east Darant and DnJT both promised Christopher that they would not rest until they had sent him to tho peni tentiary but they changed their minds and did not. It took only fourteen months for a Wall street man to build a S250.000 house, put in $90,000 worth of furni ture, lose his fortune, moTO to tho country and take a situation at $20 per week.
