Linked with the life of Frederick McKiriney, a colored man, -who has just died at Amsterdam, in this state, is an inter esting romance. Years ago he was a slave in the service of Oscar Bard well, a Virginia planter. Bardwell had a daughter whose every wish was gratified until it came to the asking of her father's consent to hermarriage with a young man of a neighboring and wealthy family. There had long been bitter feeling between the heads of each household, and time had not healed tbo breach. Bardwell, in censed at the thought of a union be tween his daughter and the son of his enemy, commanded the girl to renounce the voting man. Unlike modern heroines, the girl, instead of leaving the parental roof and fleeing with her lover, yielded lo her father's order. Not long after Miss fiardwell brought into her father's presence McKinuey, the colored slave, and, with all the fire that a revengeful act can inspire, exclaimed: "Thi3 13 my husband." Bardwell drove them from his house, and the comely white girl and her dark-skinned partner went out into the world. The' settled in Troy several yoars ago and here met a ne gro who was also formerly one of Bardweli's slaves, and who furnished the details of the straugo union of (he two lives. They afterwards moved to Amsterdam, where in a pau per's cot in the county poorhouse, the once beautiful Miss Bardwell breathed her last at the age of Gl years. Al though hers was not a marriage of love, it is said that she acted through years ot poverty aud toil the part of a true wife to her husband, to whom sho bore several children. ' McKinuey died in a cheerless shanty in an alley. From the day they left the Virginia plantation, they never heard from the rich father, and although often men aced by want, never sought his as sistance. It ig stated on good authority that the Chicago and Northwestern" com pany is determined to push its Ne braska line through to a junction with tho Central Pacific railroad, at some point in Utah, perhaps Coriuue or Promontory. If this is so, it means a union of the Northwestern and Central Pacific to parallel tho TJnion Pacific The locating en gineers have already reached a point in Wyoming near the headwaters of the Niobrara. Thence the line will push forward to the continental di vide at Coal creek, following that stream to tho North Platte and Still water, and so westward to a junction with the Central PaciGc, as has been said. It is stated that tho track will reach the' Wyoming linB ibis year. Should the Norlwestern and Central Pacific form an alliance as a trans continental competitor with the Union Pacific, it is very likely that the latter will spring away from its connection with tho Central Pacific and strike out for the western ocean on its own line. It has already done this by building tho Oregon Short line. Nor will the paralleling stop hera The Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul and the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy have occidental ambitions, and will not be content until their iron is rusted by the salt water of the Pacific ocean. The moro competitive lines across tho continent the better. The time is not far distant when the lumber of the Pacific coast will freely mingle with the pine3 of the country east of the Bockies, while the fruits of the Cascade slopes and valleys will be found on the humblest tables of the east at moderate prices. Northwestern Lumberman. The English billion (a million mil lions) has set Sir Henry Bessmer to calculating. He reckons that a bil lion seconds have not elapsed since tho world began, as they would reck on 31,678 years, 17 daj-s, 22 hours, 45 minutes and 5 secends. A chain of a billion sovereigns would pass 73G times around the globe, or lying side by side, each in contact with its neighbor, weuld form about the earth a golden zone 26 feet G inches wide. This same chain, wtro it stretched out straight, would make a lino a frac tion over 18,328.455 miles in extent. For measnring height Sir Henry chose for a unit a single sheet of pa per about one three hundred and thirty-third of an inch in thickness. A billion of these thin sheets pressed out flat and piled vertically upon each other, would attain an attitude of 47,318 miles. A gentleman recently returned to the oast from Puget sound writes of his observations while there: "Mich igan men are buying all the timber land they can get hold of. They are gliding noiselessly over the territory and dodging amid the big free3 as slyly as nesting partridges, and buy ing up tracts in the best localities. Not long hence it will be found that Michigan men own tho pick of the UUlUL-i 111 1TIUU1UJJIUU lUilllUI,. At to 3fr. Crnndj-. This potent personage has been allowed to rule too despotically in the feminine world, and the ladies say that it is time her tyranny re ceived a check. But not even Mrs. Grundy has dared to speak against the value of Brown's Iron Bitters as a strengthening tonic for ladies who suffer from debility. It enriches the blood and completely restores failing health. Miss bailie li. iraules. Wrightsville, Pa., was cured by Brown's Iron Bitters of back-ncho, kidney trouble, and liver complaint. A New York grocer says that hams are sold as customers may desire, either by actual weight or by the weight marked on them by the pack er. As a ham loses by evaporation when hung up, the actual is less than the marked weight, but the price is brought up to make things even to tho grocer. Thus a 15-pound ham, having lost a pound, would sell at IG cents a pound, or at 15 cents by marked weight, the grocer getting S2.24 by the first method and $2.25 by tho second. "The customers, there fore," says the grocer, frankly, "are the perfect lords of our establish ments. If they want hams at actual weight we shall accomodate them with tho greatest pleasure; if they prefer tho marked weight wo shall sell them with marked esteem." Adelmns translated the psalms into Saxon in 709. Other parts of the Bible weee done by Edfrid. or Eg bert, in 750; the whole by Bede. In 1357 Trerisa published the whole in English. Tindall's translation ap peared in 1331, was rovised and alter ed in 1538, published with a preface of Cranmer's in 1519, and allowed to be read in churches. In 1551 another translation was published, which, be ing revised by several bishops, was printed with their alterations in 15G0. In 1G13 a new translation was pub lished by authority, which is the one in present use. There Was no trans lation of it into the Irish language until 1GS5. The pope did not givo his permission for the translation of it into any language until 1759. Probably tho best thing the Bible revisers have done is the throwing out of the request of Job that his adversary should write a book. It has long been recognized, even by dull people, that there are too many books, and that tho Bible should con tain nothing encouraging, even in the remotest manner, their accumulation.
