'Adams, Jr. a re c ptioo the other day. lLr. Adams is at the head of the Union Pacific rail way. In his speech replying to the oration tendered him he managed to say some very sensible things. Ilere is n portion of his remarks. They will strike the average man as being pretty selid: "The present policy of the Union Pacific Eailrond company is essentially an unambitious one. It is meditating none of those great railroad surprises the streichiug out of iron bands to the west, to the north, to the south which are so easy to conceive, so dangerous to exe cute, and so irresistibly attractive to the imaginative railroad mind. On the contrary, the policy of the present management is to endeavor, in so far as it can, to follow the cxamplo and live upon the precepts of that cele brated personage, commonly sup pose! to once have resided in Ken tucky, who actually made a fortune by minding his own business. The Union Pacific is at this time steadily engaged in minding its owu business. We arc trying to fulfill our engage ments to the national government; we are trying to live in peace with our neighbors; we are trying to de velop our local resources, and deal fairly and liberally with the commu nities we serve; wo are trying to get our affairs in order, to pay our debts and earn a living. These are all very commonplace, everyday things; yet these are the things which now, to the exclusion of all pleasant dreams of bonanza development, engage the attention of those who handle the af fairs of the Union Pacific. Hence, I say, that the company is trying to make a fortune by minding its own business." "But when I sr.y this,the saying of it implies a good deal. For instance, it implies that the Union Pacific stands to-day, in its practical busi ness management, wholly and abso lutely divorced from the .stock mar ket. It is not operated with an eye to what is going on in "Wall street. "Whether the stock is up or dewn: whether bull or bear has the advan tage in dealing with it, is wholly im material to us. The thing we look to is the volume of the business that is done, and the result of that busi ness as shown in our monthly returns, which are known to the public as soon as they are known to us. These returns may not always be satisfactory and the last one, I regret to say, was far from being satisfactory nev ertheless, they indicate, and they alone indicate, the degree of success which is attending the affairs of the company." "And when I say that the company is trying to make its fortune by mind ing its own business, I mean also that it has no connection whatever which it can help with politics. "We are common carriers, and it is immaterial to us who the people may elect to rep resent them ia their legislatures, or who they may choosc'to carry out the law in the executive chambers, pro vided always that we are dealt with fairly, and left to carry on our busi ness on business and not on political principles.' "On this head I might say a good deal were it either the lime or place; bat it seems to me to be neither the one or the other. "What you unques tionably expect from me is something upon the relations which I have re ferred to as now existing, and the more immediate relations hereafter likely to exist, between you and the company I represent. Yet again as bearing upon this point, I can only repeat that the Union Pacific com pany, going ahead in an unambitious, quiet matter of fact fashion, proposes so far as it can to let the people of Oregon mind their own business in their own way, well satisfied that through their so doing will the Union Pacific derive for itself the largest possible benefits." "When a man talks in this way he commands confidence and respect, and in goneral his remarks apply equally as well io less important bus iness than a great railroad company. The appointment of such a man as Zach. Montgomery to the important position ot assistant attorney general must be pleasant to those holy men of Harpers Weekly and the New York Times, the Springfield Republican and other mugwump journals, who helped make such ap pointments possible. Those folks think that the public schools are the great bnlwark of American liberty; Zach thinks that they are a special device of the devil to lead souls as tray. It must be pleasant to those folks to get a slap across the face from the hand that they supplied with power. Hfo The Chicago Mail remarks: "The prince of "Wales has approved the new version of the old Testament, and has so informed th e archb hop of Canterberry. The prince is not con sidered the highest authority on scriptural subjects. "While well qual ified to criticise modern drama or a horse race, ho presumes too much when he ventures to give an opinion on the merits of the revised Bible.
