THE OLDEST EX-COXGRESSJIAN.
Recollections or a Man Who Served Ills
Slate 3fany Years Ago.
Hon. David Fisher is the oldest es
cougressman in tbe United States,
being in the ninety-first year of his
age. Mr Fisher served in the war of
1812, and soon after married, taking
his bride to a small house one mile
from the cabin in which General
Grant was born. He loves to dwell
ou the life of General Grant, whose
birth he remembers. He tells of
dancing with the general's mother
when she was Miss Hanna Simpson,
aud before Jessie R Grant had court
ed and wedded' her. The old com
mander was a personal friend of old
Tom Corwin, and stumped the state
during the hard cider campaign in
1810, at which time he was a Yhig.
In 1816 he was elected to tho thir
tieth congress, serving oue term and
refusing a re-nomination. The lam
ented Lincoln was a member of tho
same congress, and the two becamel
fast menus, rooming together for
some time in a boarding house where
there were formed relations that were
only dissolved by Lincoln's death.
Or Lincoln's character he says: ''He
was tho most lovable public man I
ever met, and like me did not retr-n
to congress, but, unlike me, a 1 tv
years after becamo tho greatest mn
of the age and the savior of the Un
ion. I strongly advocated his nom
ination for tho presidency at the Chi
cago convention, and his winning the
prize there was porhaps the first step
toward the regeneration of our laud.
Before the war, while traveling in
the west, I spent three days at his
bouse in bpnnglield, and one even
ing, remarking that I had not received
tho congressional dictionary, for
which I had subscribed and paid, Mr.
Lincoln said: 'Take one of miue; I
have two; and yon will see that it
speaks better of yon than it does of
me. In answer to a question relat
ive to the death of ex-president John
Quincy Adams, tho old commander
replied with evident emotien: "Ad
ams was, next to Mr. Liucoln, tho
grandest man I ever met. His seat
in the house was directly opposite
mine, only a narrow aisle separating
our desks. The ex-president was
very old and for years quite feeble,
having a slight touch of paralysis.
One dav, just before Washington's
birthday, in 1818, Mr. Adams half
rose up from his seat and suddenly
pnt his hand to his head, whereupon
I ioae uujrpm my desk and caught
him in my7rrm5dst"roSire:;was sink
ing.' The'houso was in an uproar,
but in an instant the word was passed
rouuu that Adams was dying and im
mediately members came to my aid
aud we carried the fallen statesman
into tho speaker's room, where three
das later the mortal spirit of 'tho
old man eloquent had gone to us
Maker. He never spoke after falling
into my arms, save that historical
ejaculation uttered just pre
vious to his final dissolution."
Mr. Fisher was identified with tho
Hon. Salmon P. Chase in the
organization of the Republican party.
He now resides with a married daugh
ter, whoso residence is a most beau
tiful one and not five miles from the
place where he took his brido so
many years ago. In form he is
stately and impressive, but has been
blind for twenty years. Speaking of
social life in Washington, ho says the
finest entertainment he ever attended
was Senator Benton's party to his
son-in-law; General Fremont, on his
return irom the Mexican war. Col
umbus Herald.
A SWEDISH GORiVA.
How a Erave Maiden Outwitted a Kins
and Saved Her People.
Tho 2nd of February in Sweden is
considered the midwinter day. In
the era of Paganism it was a great
festival in honor of Uig heroiuo Goa
or Goja, defined under the namo of
Disa, to whom tho whole month was
consecrated besides. It is stated that
at ono timo when the countrj was
visited by a frightful famine, the
national assembly decided that in
order to relievo the general distress
it would bo necessary to put to death
a part of the population, especially
the old and infirm. Goa alone dared
to protest loudly, and claimed to bo
able to propose a meaus of remedying
the dearth, which would prove more
efficacious as well as more humane.
Tho king ordered the execution of
the decree to be .postponed; but in
the interim, desiriug to test the sa
gacity of tho young girl, and to con
found her audacity, he sent her word
he would only receive her on condi
tion that sho would come to his dwell
ing neither on foot nor on horseback,
nor in a vehicle, neither by day nor
by night. Goa solved tho enigma.
She came to the king's liouso on a
sledge drawn by a goat, holding on
to the side of tho sledge, with one leg
resting on tho polo of the sledge, the
other on the goat She wore a fishing
net only in lieu of garments, and she
came exactly at tho epoch of the sol
stice when the month is still undeter
mined, at the time of a full moon, but
wnne u was yet twuiguc juemg per
mitted to speak, she advised that the
old and infirm, in lieu of being ex
terminated, should bo merely sent to
the still unpeopled parts of tho coun
try, where they would be able to ob
tain tho means of existence without
being any burden to tho community.
The king liked tho advice, and as the
adviser had charmed him by her
beauty and her wit, ho took her for
his wife.

HENRI ROCKEF ORT.
Tho death of the communist, Ohas.
Amouraux, gave M' Henri Bochefort
an opportunity to address the com
munists who had assembled to do tho
last honors to their comrade at the
cemetery of Pere la Chaise. The ef
fect of a speech by Bochefort upon
such inflammable material, coupled
with the death of Hugo can easily
be imagined, aud cro long a riot oc
curred which tho police wero called
upon to subdue. Many of tho papers
demanded tho arrest of Bochefort,
fearing the result of his ill advised
harangues. Bochefort (Comte), Vic
tor Henri do Bochefort Lucay is the
son of Marquis Claudo Louis Mario
do Bochfort Lucay, and was born in
Paris, Jan. 30, 1830; he studied at
tho college of St. Louis, where he
evinced a decided tasto for poetry.
After attempting to study medicine
and to pain a livlihood by teaching
Latin, lie was in 1851 appointed a
clerk in the Hotel do Yillo. Paying
moro attention to literature than
to this humble employment, ho con
tributed to tho second edition of the
"Dichonnaire de la Conversation."
He was appointed sub-inspector of
fine arts at Paris, which post he re
signed in 1861. Iu 1S53 ho became
one of the principal writers of the
Figaro. His satirical comments on
passing events in the columns .of the
Figaro and his caustic criticism of
tho men and measures of he second
empire made the nam of Henri
Bochefort . peculiarly ohnoxions to
the authorities. Iu iSGOLc was elect
ed a deputy. In the. ohambers he
rendered hiuiseK notorious by the
coarae icss of his personal attacks on
the emperor. In December, 1SG9, he
started the Jlarscillai-sr, a newspaper,
the character of which is sufficiently
indicated by its title; it was seized in
1870 and Mr. Bochefort arrested and
couiined for six mouths. On the pro
clamation of theBepublican3 Septem
ber 1870 ho was placed at the head of
a department of slate, bnt soon re
signed his appointment. During the
brief triumph of the commune ho
edited an infamous journal, tho Mot
iTOrdre. Various charges wero
brought against him iu connection
with this paper, aud he was" arrested
and sentencad to imprisonment for
life. He was taken to tho penal set
tlement of New Caledonia. In 187-1
he, with several other note'd commu
nists succeeded in escaping to Syd
ney, thence going to Queenstown and
afterwards to London. Leaving Lon
don he proceeded to Geneva whero
he founded a new Lanterne. The gen
eral amnesty of July 11th, 1880, per
mitted him to return to Paris, where
he assumed the direction of tho new
radical paper called JSInlransigcant.
For articles which appeared in this
paper tho government began legal
proceedings against, him, but he was
acquitted.
From s Sense of Uaty.
Some people shrink from making
public the bsnofit they have received
while others are freo to tell it abroad
for the good of follow mortals. Of
the latter kind is Mr. J. it. Coppuck,
of Mount Holly, N. J., who writes,
'I am one of many who give their
cheerful appreciation of tho merits
of the- Pllicacy of your valuable
Brown's Irou Bitters from a sense of
duty. This bitters is doing much
good in our count r3, for which I can
vouch."
B. L. Cropley of Washington, has
been appointed collector of customs
at Georgetown, D. C. Cropley is the
man who proposed tho following sen
timent after Lincoln's assassinatien:
''Here is to the man who pulled the
trigger that killed the man who freed
tho nigger."
Are You Tired of Ecin Sick !
We want to say a word to the men,

You are shut up too much and exer

don't feel like work. Your liver,
