SEW toec CTtg FRENCH ICONOCLASTS. Tho most carious feature of. the ob sequies of Victor Hugo whose fun eral is said to have been the most imposing that ever took place in France- w;is the fact that not a single priest was to be seen in the vast as semblage, and that before the poet's body was received, at the Pantheon the edifice was secularized by the destruction of the cross which sur mounted its main entrance. At early daybreak, a workman, by order of the government, deliberately sawed oft the arms of the cross, thus divest ing it of its religions character. A similar mutilation would have been practiced on the great cross which surmounts the dome, but for its size and the impossibility of removing its fragments in the time allotted. The performance was in strict accord ance with Yictor Hugo's will, which declared that there should be no re ligious element in the celebration of his funeral. Americans, whatever their opin ions may be, will view this operation with the contempt which extrava gance engenders. The late 31. Hugo was a free-thinker. So are many prominent men in this country. But what is the good of following the example of the barbarous ages and testifying our faith by hewing in piec es the symbols of a Teligion which we may "not appreciate, but which affords" a good deal of comfort to millions of our fellow creatures throughout the world? "We can hard ly restrain our indignation at the brutal stupidity of the Goths who manifested their derision at the gods of Greece and Bomo by destroying works of art which they were equally incapable of appreciating and of re producing. "Wc feel ashamed of the Frenchmen of the last century who celebrated their emancipation from priestly tyranny by defacing the no ble cathedrals of the middle ages. Such performances seem to 113 child ish akin to tho action of the child who breaks his pocket-knife because he has cut his fincrer with it. In suf fering them M. Hugo's friend? seem to have resolved to perpetuate those trails in his character which made him ridiculous instead of IhoFe which made him noble and grand. It is a pity. We are always ready to take the side ot the staco or the drawing-room against ecclesiastical intolerance, but decency will not per mit a wanton insult to the faith of millions to pass without rebuke. There are far more Frenchmen who venerate the cross than there are who reject it. They may be wrong, but no one, not the executors of the great poet, nor ths government of Bepublicau France, can be justified in borrowing an example from At tila and Alaric, and declaring by their acts that tho national mauso leum of France was uot fitted to re ceive Yictor Hugo's body till it had been stripped of the emblem of Christianity. r I 1 1 If-fl I'l .m Li JL J-U !JUL-I CJL pi lLOBB & GO.
