The Beda put off mo3t of her freight
yesterday and started inland. She had a
lot of salmon boxes sent up to the Eureka
Packiug company from San Francisco.
It looks funny to see salmon boxes "im
ported" from California into this wooden
country where salmon boxes are turned
out at a rate and of a quality that
would seem to make imported boxes un
necessary. The Oregon went out yesterday morn
ing without mail or express matter from
here, to the inconvenience of business
men generally. There is some excuse,
however for the vessel, she being natur
ally desirous to get away on an ebb tide,
itliaving been high water at seven min
utes past five. The Oregon averages
Eretty well and she being so much be
ind tiire coming in made it necessary
for her to rush out half dressed as it were.
The Korlh and Alcalde are carrying
freight here for $1.50 a ton from San
Francisco. There is no primage about
it. A dollar and a half means a
dollar and a half. It beats $4 and gouge
all to pieces. Some things can be done
as well as others, and with a regular
freight packet line from San Francisco,
and the Telephone to Portland, Astorians
can snap their fingers at the Boston cor
poration that is fast playing itself out in
-an attempt to run Columbia river steam
boats on the red tape idea that employes
will steal if they're not watched. And

BRITISH BKSETOLEST S0CIETT.
A number of gentlemen met at the
office of Vice Consul P. L. Cherry last
evening to organize .1 society in this city
to be known as the British Benevolent
Association; the meeting was called to or

was to organize a society whoso purpose
and object were to afford relief and mu

cultivate a fraternal feeling among those
who hail from xiorts across the sea and
elsewhere, the main intent being to form
a nucleus for social and benficient ends

There being some inquiry regarding
the item in yesterday's Astosun about
the probable formation of a military
company in this city, the following com
piled from tho Oregon statutes, is pub
lished in answer therete:
"Whenever a sufficient number of per
sons subject to military duty subscribe
to a call for the organization of a volun
teer militia company, step3 may be tak
en to complete the organization; the
company elects its officers and is fur
nished arms and accoutrements required.
The county furnishes an armory and the
state pays fifty dollars a month for rent,
etc. The uniform is similar to U. S.
army uniform, but any militia company
can have an additional uniform that suits
the members.
The recent visit of Captain George J.
Ainsworth, of San Francisco, to this city
has created considerable interest among
steamboat men. Some think his visit
was to revive the old Oregon Steamship
company and to equip a fleet of new
boats to navigate the Columbia and "Wil
lamette rivers and their tributaries.

"Havana cigars?" queried a dealer,
when questioned on this subject. "They
can be purchased in" this city, of course.
But not for ten cents no sir. A genu
ine Havana, one that is unquestionably
composed entirely of that delightfully
fragrant tobacco, cannot bo profitably
sold under twenty-flvo cents at retau.
"But," said tho astonished reporter,
"how do yon reconcile that statement
with this one?' and tho scribe pointed
to a sign over tho dealer's head, which
informed the public that three genuine
Havana cigars could bo purchased at the
counter for a quarter.
"Well!', said the dealer, winking his
larboard eye confidentialy. "I can sell
you three of those cigars. Try one."
The newspaper man selected from an
elaborately lithographed box, in colors, a
narrow-pointed cigar from a bundle done
up in tin-foil and labled "Regalia Concha
Fina." The flavor of tho cigar was de
cidedly 'Havana. Upon its dark-brown
surface a number of tiny specks of
lighter shade showed its rare quality,
and its silken smoothness of wrapper in
dicated elaborateness of workmanship.
"Fjne cigar, ain't it?' queried the
dealer. "But it ain't Havana, except to
the general public, who can't tell a Ha
vana cigar from a lamp post, xou smiie,
but it's so. Doesn't that cigar dry your
throat? I thought so. That's on un
failing sign that the cigar is flavored with
chemicals. You also notice that the
smoke burns tho tongue a trifle this
will increase as you pull on tho
cigar, and when it is almost
smoked out your tongue may
havo a slight blister upon it; probably
not if you smoked one or two, but if you
habitually smoko them this would surely
be the result. This is the action of tho
flavoring extract used upon the tender
skin of tho lips and the fibers of the
tongue. . Fll venture to say that there are
more cases of bronchitis and cancer of
tho tongue arising out of tho use
of flavored cigars than from any other
cause."
A general inquiry among the trado con
firmed the dealer's startling assertions.
Few smokers can tell a genuine Havana
cigar from a flavored one, and nono of
them except men of moneYi are willing
to pay more than ten to twenty-five cents
for a cigar. Upon these two latter facts
an enormous trado in flavored cigars has
8prungup. Many eastern drag hoascs
now put ud a Havana flavoring extract
of Tonka (vanilla) bean, bay rum and
other substances, which is largely sold
to the cigar manufacturers all over tho
country. So keou is tho competition
among tho drug trado for this class of
patronage that free samples are sent by
tho dozen to every new manufacturer
with circulars claiming this or that excel
lency for the compound.
Tho process of manufacturing a
bogas Havana cigar is as follews:
The manufacturer, having secured
the necessary flavoring extract, takes
his domestic tobacco aud begins
with the filler. Sometimes a thin
strip of the genuine Havana leaf is
rolled np and placed in the center of the
cigar, but only in A 1 brands. Generally
the entire maES used for filling is steejed
in the extract or sprinkled with it. Next
comes in tho wrapper this goes through
the same process. When tho cigar is
wrapped and before it dries, a thin solu
tion of cither muriatic or nitric acid is
carefully sprinkled over it with n fine
brush thus bringing out by bleaching the
pretty light brown specks which the con
fiding smoker fondly believes to be a
sign of good tobacco. Tho alleged Hav
ana 'cigar next passes into tho hands of a
girl, who has spread out before her on a
stone a composition of brown paint and
oil. Over this tho cigar is carefully
rolled, and -the product of these various
processes is a well-finished, fragrant
cigar, with a dark, oily wrapper, whose
beaaiifully speckled surface would de
ceive the" eye of an expert smoker.
Packed in tin foil and laid in a fragrant
cedar box, elaborately adorned with a
colored lithograph 01 voluptuous sug
gestivenees, and tho cigar can bo sold
over any counter in the United States for
a uime. aomeumes mo uox i;seu as
sponged with or steeped in the flavoring
extract, but this is only done to cheap
brands that lack even a suggestion of
Havana fragrance.
