AX OLD TRAGEDY RECALLED. Light Thrown on the Loss of the Sher- raau in Corea, aad the Belieadinp of her Crew. Washington, June 2. Lieutenant George O. Foulk of the navy, under date of Seoul, Corea, 3Iarch 29th, has sent to the navy deparlmant au account of tho destruction of the American schooner Sherman and the beheading of a portion of her crew, ou the Yellow sea, coast of Corea, in I860. Tho narrative was prepared from accounts obtained from Corean Christians of good standing, and is published for the first time. Lieu tenant Eoulk says: "The Sherman arrived in the Felonc river in Aug ust, and anchored n short distance below Phyong Yang city. The Sher man was seen from the walls of Phong Yang, and was the cause of much excitement, bnt on account of thedangeroiLs condition ot the river, which was then very high, no boat ventured near her "for some time. When tho water began to subside the provincial governor sent officers to inqnre his mission. The common people took advantage of the depart ure of these officers for the Sherman, to gratify their own curiosity, and went with them, the whole party being in a large iieet ot small boats which put out from ehoro together. The Sherman's people, not understanding the object of the approachiug espediton, consid ered the movement as a hostile dem onstration, and tired several shots in the air. Tue officers, accompanied by all the other people, at once turned back, and returned to the city. The river fell rapidly after this, and in a few days the Sherman went aground. This was seen from the city's walls, and another fleet ot boats came to wards the schooner, this time with hostile intent, the people being armed. Shots were again tired from the Sher man, and the Coreans turned back as before. 13oth the officers and the people were now enraged. Boats were leaded with combustible materi al and taken to points above the schooner anchorage. Here they were fired, aud allowed to drift down upon her. The Sherman wao soon in iiames, aud her people jumped over board to save themselves, but most of them were drowned. A few were picked up by the Corean boats. The prisoners were brought before Kamsa and examined. They told the object of the Sherman's coming. All efforts to save themselves were useless, how ever, and in a few days they were led out of prison and beheaded. commodop.k sennnx's story. Up to 1870 the United States gov ernment could learn nothing of the Sherman-s destruction. In that year Hear Admiral John Rogers, in command ot the Asiatic station, was ordered to investigate her loss. Com modore Schley, of Greely relief fame, was at the time connected with the station as lieutenant commander. Referring to the expedition to-day, he said: "The Asiatic squadron went to the Yellow sea and to tho mouth of the Sale river, our object being to learn if possible something of the Sherman- loss. In order to ascend the river we obtained permission from the Corean officials to make a survey of it. The squadron ascended the river somo distance. The Palos and the JoHocac; continued fnrther. Thcso two vessels were fired upon from the Corean fortifications, and returned to the other vessels of the squadron. Admiral Rogers sent a message to the Corean officials, giving them ten days in which they might make an explanation for firing on tho American vessels. No attention was given to the communication, and at the expiration of ten days the admiral determined to secure an explanation by force. We lauded 1.000 men, and attacked the fortification?. The re sult was that nearly 700 Coreans were killed, and about 150 taken prisoners. Wo lost only twenty-five or thirty. The explanation afterwards given for firing on our vessels was that Coreans never allowed a foreign vessel to go np the river without firing on it. Our investigation of the &jer marts destruction was terminated because ot the fight wilh the Cor eans." Commodore Schley attribut03 to this fight the making of the Corean treaty with the United States about two years ago. A Ihmoau Drugstore. Never was such a rush made for any Drag Store as is now at W.
