AFGHAN BOUNDARY S ETTLEHF.NT.
New Yobk, June L A. special from
London says: "The official declra
tion here of Kussia's agrecmeat to bo
satisfied, for the time being, with that
she has seized caused little excite
ment Nobody was surprised or
more than passively interested by the
statement, the essentials of which
have been discussed for a fortnight
past, that the fight was off. Eussia
has practically got all she wants, and
is bound by no pledges for the future.
General Komaroff has been exalted
and honored beyond any Russian
general of his generation, while Sir
Peter Lumsden's call has been se
cured under conditions which, to the
Asiatic mind at least, imply disgrace.
The Afghans?, Persians and perhaps
in a degree the Indians too have been
giTen a strikingly vivid object-lesson
on the subject of England's timidity
under pressure. If the czar is dis
satisfied with the net result ho must
be difficult indeed to please. John
Bull certainly is not pleased, bnt
then be only half realizes it, and is
entirely in the fog as to what to do
about it. In playing a merciless cut
throat game in European politics a
despotism has this immense ad
vantage over n government by
a parliament The autocrat knows
clearly what ho wants, while the pre
mier, who is chiefly anxious about
the elections, does not From the
Russian side the game has been
played for all it is worth, by a single
resolute gamester who had nobody to
pleaso but hiaiself. The English side
was played solely with reference to
presumed prejudices, ignorance or in
terests of 300 or 400 constituences,
most of which will bo dominated in
the next election by now and unlet
tered eleotors. Penjdeh is tho price
paid for the experiment, by a free and
constitutional government to a con
scienceless despotism.
THE NORTHWEST REBELLION.
Winnipeg, June L Tho steamer
Northwest, en route to Pitt, came
across Jame3 grant and Charles Ros
siter, in a canoe, sixty miles up the
river. They left Pitt Thursday night
with dispatches for Middleton, a
fight between Stiange's force and
Big Bear's band having taken place
that day. Rossiter informed your
correspondent that Big Bear s loca
tion was discovered on Wednesday,
and an advance was made the follow
ing morning. As the whole of
Strange's troops bad not yet arrived
at Pitt he could only muster about
300 men, his force conaistingjof two
companies of thoWinnipeg 'ligfit in
fantry, two companies of the Sixty
fifth batallion. Alberta mounted iu
fantry, and Captain Steele's police
scouts.
A march of ton miles down tho river
and three miles inland brought the
troops to the Indian camp. The red
skins were intrenched just over the
brow of a hill, and in order to reach
them Strange was obliged to cros3 a
marshy valley. While advancing the
Indians commenced firing, and the
troops were extended in skirmishing
order. Eor three hours and a 'half a
steady fire was kept up from both
side?. The troops had- good cover.
The grenadiers did good servico in
driving the Indians from their quar
ters, bnt the number killed conld not
be ascertained.
Strange's loss was very small, only
three men of the Sixty-fifth being
wounded, ATarcotte, of No 3 company
fatally wounded, aad two in No.o com
pany. Tho troops retired in good order to
Pitt. Tho Sixty-fifth company came
down the river in a scow, and went
inland to the scene of the battle.
Thirteen men were left behind to
guard the provisions on board. Af
ter the fight tho scow could not be
found, and neither the men nor the
scow have turned np since.

D. RAPAEIi ZAIiDrVAR.
President D. Rafael Zaldivar of
San Salvadore bas been compelled to
flee the country. It will bo remem
bered that when General Barrios of
Guatamala attempted to establish a
dictatorship over the Central Ameri
can republics the project was at first
sanctioned by Zaldivar and Barrios
accordingly made all preparations to
forco tho other states to submit At
the last moment, however, Zaldivar
withdrew his support and raised an
army to oppose Barrios with tho re
sult of the total defeat of the
Guatemalian forces nnd tho
death of Barrios upon the
battlefield of Chalchuapa. No
sooner, however, was Barrios out of
tho way than Zaldivar proposed a
project similar to that of the dead
dictator. To further this end he on
April 21st, addressed the government
of Guatemala, asking that five com
missioners bo appointed to meet at
Santi Tecla on May loth, 1833, to
proclaim a union of tho Central Amer
ican republics. To this Guatemala
would not accede, and tho result of
the schemo was that Zaldivar was
compelled to flee. Don Rafael Zaldi
var Lazo was born in 1834, and
wa3 by profession a physician. In
1350, however, -ho tnrned his atten
tion to politics and was elected to
the house of representatives and
afterwards to the San Salvadorian
Senate. In 1876 he was made presi
dent and was reelected in 1880 and
again in 183L He is said to have
been assisted greatly by the late Gen
oral Barrios in bis political advances.
Like the dead dictator, Zaldivar
said to be very wealthy, bnt w th
commcndablo foresight invested, his
money in foreign seenrities. Thn3
his property remains unaffected by
his political reverses. Barrio3 had
his wealth similarly invested and
upon his death his widow was
left with tho neat sum of from
seven to ten millions of dollars.

The Mayor of Baltimore and every
other leading municipal official have,
in conjunction with the Governor of
Maryland and other heads of the
State Government, publicly end orsod
by their Augtograph signatures the
certiGcate of tho Health Commis
sioner of Baltimore, setting forth the
facts that the harmful and frequently
fatal results attending the use of
cough mixtures containing opiates,
narcotics or poisons are entirely over
come in the Red Star Cough Cnre.
They state that it happily supplants
the objectionable and dangerous
features of preparations heretofore
relied upon, and which have often
caused tho death of children.

It is said on good authority that
500 laborers employed on tho South
ern Pacific railroad near Calienle,
Kern county, will shortly be trans
ferred to Delta, tho present terminus
of the California and Oregon, for the
extension of that line.
