John Smith is one of the most pe culiar men I ever knew, and I have knovn him from my infancy. He has followed me from the time I first formed his acquaintance until this hour. When I was married, over 509 miles "from the place of my birth, he was at my wedding, having been ac quainted with my wife's people long before I ever heard the name. When our first babe was born he officiated as master of ceremonies, although when I first knew bim ho was a sec tion hand ou a railroad, and at the time of my marriage was a risiug young sign painter, lie was my school master for a considerable period be tween tbose two dates, and when 1 joined tho church ho baptized mo into the taith. John Smith has never been a hun dred miles away from mo in my life. When I was practicing law at White hall, III., he ran a farm less tban four milesfrom the village. When I vxas principal of the village school atluka, live of his boys reaped off the harvest of knowledge I was sowing. Although John Smith's five sons were my pupils at Iuka three months before, when John Smith sailed me down the gulf coast of Florida in an open boat, he was a bachelor. It is strange how soon he amassed a family. In about nine weeks after I found hm a bachelor in Florida he had been a married man in Iuka for nearly nine years. I could not help looking upon him with suspicion; but, a year later, when I found him in the legis lature at Springfield with four blush ing daughters swarming around him, I was astonished. He has been where I could get him on an hour's notico for more than twenty years, and in spite of this fact I am told that he has committed a large number of crimes and misdemeanors. While I was sitting Jin the jgallery of the Illi nois house of representatives listening to a speech from him on the Harper high license bill, ho ran away with thewife of a prominent physician in Chicago. How he managed to do so without being discovered is more than I can understand. While the Sheriff of Macoupin county was look ing for him with a posse for horse stealing he was preaching in one of the most prominent churches in that county, and one day, while he and I were catching bass out of Long lake, over in Green county, he fell from tho lop of the new postoffice building in St Louis and was killed- and, while his funeral was in progress, he robbed a bank aud escaped to Can ada from northern New York. When I came to Bloomington he was a passenger conductor on the Chicago and Alton railroad; but I had hardly got settled when he came to mo in the guise of a tramp printer, but he had been in so many scrapes that I declined to have anything to do with him. It was less than two weeks afterward that I saw a dis patch in the daliy papers stating that he had fallen heir to SIO.OO'J I y the death of u rich uncle in Australia. A year ago he was driving a team of street-car mules in Bloomington, but it was only a year later that I got a draft from a Colorado bank contain ing his signature as cashier. John Smith never gets up in the world, however, but what he comes down again ih a remarkably short time, and I hardly had my draft cashed, when I saw a dispatch announcing his election to Congress from South Carolina. During the same week a mob got hold of him in Wyoming and hanged him to a tele graph polo for driving off cattle be longing to another man; but before the coroner could summon a jury lo inquire into his death, he had taken a contract to build a new jail iu one of the back counties of Indiana. John Smith is one of the most un steady men I ever knew. The jail he contracted to build could not have been moro than half done wheu he was appointed postmaster of a north era town in Ohio, and before he had qualified by filing his bond and tak ing the Qath, a Mexican greaser las soed him and dragged him over the prairies until he was a calm and harmless corpse, whose bones were left to bleach on the sandy plains of Arizona. During the last month he seems to l-ave done much better, however. It appears that he married a ric. wid ow and her five grown daughters in Tennessee, and was on his way to Utah, where he was to be installed as one of the apostles of the Mormon church. Oh his way out, however, the train ran off tho track, and left him one-sixth widower, having killed his wife and mother-in-law combined. He is now probably safely arrived at Salt Lake. Later. Dispatches state that ho was killed yesterday at a fire in San Francisco. Still later. He was arrested at the New Orleans opposition the other day for dropping counterfeit mouey in tho fare box at the entrance. Bloomington Through Hail. Friction matches are now made at the rate of 24,000 per minute, and the children can have plenty to play with. The Bev. Tom Beecher has made a request in his will that his body be cremated and that his widow avoid wearing black. Nothing captious about him. What on earth the army wajits of a SIO.OOO balloon is a mystery, but tho ordnance board has ordered one made. Perhaps it is to give the officers an airinf j Tho building inspectors of Chicago have held an inquest on a structure which tumbled down, and come to I the conclusion that 'it was not sub- staut ally erected." They took three ounces of brains away from a Pennsylvania man with out injuring his smartness in the least There is a great deal of waste about the human body. The Boston Post says that the ru mor that a leading resident of a New England village is about to set a hen or get his boots tapped witl stir up as ' much excitement as a presidential election. A horse at Charleston tipped over a couple of bee hives to see if they contained oats or bees. It pained him considerably to discover that oats weren't left lying around in that shape. One reason why England shouldn't allow Bussia to seize Herat is because she intends to give it a new name in case of possession. It will be c died Popoffkoskovitch orsome such thing. Several New Yorkers are talking about jumping off East river bridge in case a purse of 35)3 can bo raised by ontsiders. There is room in the east for lots of additional idiot asy lums. The other day a Boston laly state J that the principals of nine of the ten schools she visited affirmed that not less lhau forty per cent of their boys bstweeu 6 and 10 years of age use to bacco already. Bugg, the Long Island murderer, who is to bo hung Friday, has re ceived over 200 bouquets of flowers Trom sympathizing females, every one of whom ought to be sent to the work house for thirty days. Tho newspapers in Liberia have formed a ring and run the price of advertising a lo3t cow or cook wanted up lo twenty-five cents. Tho excite ment is intense, and indignant crowds are holding public meetings. A New Yorker wants a divorce on the grounds that his wife, who was a widow when he married her, said nothing about her children, but had five whom she suddenly rushed in on him before the honeymoon had waned.
