mand of Captain Chaffee, is to-day
scouring the San Mateo mountains
in hot pursuit of the Indians. The
troops are not more than ten or
twelve hours behind. A fight is ex

Lyon, a man named Baxter aud an
other named Smith. Twenty-fonr
men are known to havo been killed
in a radius of twenty-four miles. Sev
en were buried by troops and seven
teen by citizens, who intercepted In
dians who had commenced to raid
settlements on the Gila river, driving
them back into the mountains. Gov
ernor Sheldon has ordered out four
companies of mounted militia to co
operate -with the regulars two from
Socorro under Colonel Eaton, and
two from La Guano under Colonel
Marrcon. The latter companies are
composed of Pueblo Indians.

dian scouts are reported deserting to
thehostiles. A Fort Bayard special
says: Indians are leaving the reserv
ation daily. The number of Indians
doing killing in (ho last ten days is
said by military authorities to be
only 131 bucks, eight half grown boys,
and ninefy-two squaws. Outside re
ports indicate many more.
News from the north says that sev
eral men were killed in the Black
range country, and Indians are out
breaking from the Mescalero agency.
Captain Smith. Fourth cavalry, who
followed the Indians from the reser
vation, passed through Silver City to
day lor Jb'ortUayard. In the fight at
Devil's Park one Indian was killed,
and one soldier ond ono Indian scout
were wounded. Captain Smith
routed the Indians capturing 2,003
rounds of government ammunition
and nine ponies. General Bradley,
now at Fort Bayard, has ord' red two
