tried in London an interesting libel
suit James Ashmorc sued Sir Al
gernon Borthwick, the proprietor of
the Jlorniny Post, because the news
paper had printed among its police
items the trial of plaintiff in a police
court for assaulting his wife, and had
used the words of the prosecuting at
torney in his opening speech, in
which plaintiff was characterized as
'drunken and lazy." Lord Coleridge
said he had never heard it laid down
and it would be a monstrous thing
if it should be--that a fair report of
an opening speech by counsel con
stituted a libel. The jury, according
to his lordship's instructions, found
for the defendant
