A PERILOUS TRIP.
J Escitlnj; Ride Over the Kootenai Rapids
I inn Bateau.
Tho following slory v.-as iold to a
Statesman reporter by W. H. Toles.
wuo naa just mauc mo run ol uie vju
lumbia river Ironi the lino of Ihe Can
adian Pacific to the Little Dalles: Tho
party consisted of 3Ir. Toles, James
J3owen, Archie and Paul McDonald
and H. H. Wright They struck the
Columbia at Far well, the second
crossing of the river on tbe Canadian
Pacific going west At that point a
bateau 33 feet in leugth, G feet wide
and G foot beam was constructed
or split cedar, and when completed
and laden with worldly goods the
voyage was begun.
'Ihe Brat twenty-live miles was
passed without any event worth men
tioning. As tho boat was gliding
along rappidly in comparatively
smooth but swift water a snag was
suddenly encountered, which upset
the bateau in a twinkling, throwing
the five voyagers into the ice-cold
water and forcing them to swim for
dear life. All hands landed safely on
shore, but the bateau and its contents
was gone, but fortunately was cap
tured again a few mile3 below strand
ed on a rock in tho rapids By this
accident the party lost about S200 in
currency, their matcLes, clothing,
blankets, provisions, etc., and of the
entire outut only one sack ot llour
was saved. Nothin daunted the party
relaunched on tho tiresome journey.
The Arrowhead lakes were reached
aud there with a fair wind they
made over sixty miles a day.
unce tnrougu tue lanes tuo jvooieuni
rapids were reached and there the fun
commenced. The immense body of
water flowing down the Columbia was
here compressed through a narrow
and rocky gorge and the seething
waters boiled ahd threw up a mist so
heavy that the banks could hardly be
distinguished. The waves rolled
twelve and fourteen feet high and
broke over projecting rocks with a
roar that deafened the silent ou-look-ers,
who gazed upon the sceuo with a
feeling of awe, mingled with fear.
Everything ready, the batean plunged
into the first white capped wave, aud
for an instant was lost to sight, then
again emerging into view it was shot
like an arrow down stre;un, narrowly
escaping being thrown on an ominous-looking
boulder projectiug from
the water m mid-stream Iiko a grim
sentinel calmly watching the approach
of the enemy "to launch forth his mes
senger o! death. Then tho boat was
suddenly drawn into a calm, where
the exhausted boatmen hope.l for
rest, but were to bo disapointed, for
the water begins to describe a cir
cle. The whirlpool is filling and
a moment's delay on tho spot
meaus death. The bateau and
its precious cargo will be sucked into
the now troublesome vortex aud all
will bo lost "With the energy of des
peration tho four oars beat the water
and suddenly the craft shoots forth
and leaves tho whirlpool behind,
whicb by this time, as if maddened
by the escape ot its proy, boiled and
seethed and whirled in its seemingly
frantic attempts to swamp its prey.
Tho entire forty-two milesof the
Kootenai rapids was a repetition of
such scenes, but the gallant crew
destined to an accident on the first
day, were also destined to pass safely
by the rapids, which mean almost
death to pass over in a frail bateau.
Tho journey of 220 miles was thus
made in five days. From that on the
journey was thus made in compara
tive comfort and safety. A boat con
taining four Swedes passed down
ahead aud attempted to niako the
Little Dalles rapids, but being unac
quainted with them they were drawn
iuto a whirlpool as it was filling and
were sucked beneath tho water, and
boat or men were never seen again.
Since last fall eighteen deaths by
drowning on this river are known,
and how many have passed away to
the unknown through this watery
gate will never be discovered.
