A STUMPING EXPERIENCE.
Kentucky is a great state. V?To
have the handsomest women in the
world, we make the bpst whisky,
have the most fertile lands, raise the
best horses and have the purest air.
In addition to that, our people pull
together, but they do not like snob
bishness. I remember one time
I was stumping one of the
mountain counties. I bought twenty
five dollars worth of nickels and put
them in my saddle-bags. Every Jog
cabin I would como to I would ride
up and ask for a drink of water. Well,
out would come a little boy or girl
with a gourd or a dipper of water. I
would take a swallow, then drop a
nickel in tho dipper. The little one
would run in and I would go on.
The child's mother would come and
have the fat gentleman pointed out,
The consequence was that I got the
vote out of that house.
Well, one morning I rode up to a.
house and a little girl brought me
out a dipper of ivater. I felt in my
pocket and discovered that I hadn't a
copper.
".Little girl," said I, ''I generally
have a nickel about me, but I haven't
to-day, so I'll give you what s the
next best thing for a girl, and that's
a kiss."
So I got down off my horse and
kissed her for my own little blue
eyed girl at homo. She didn't mind
it Another litttle black-eyed girl
here showed up, I had to kiss hor for
a niece of mine whom she looked
like. By this time another little girl
half a head taller than the test showed
up, and not to be partial, I kissed
her, when I found that four or five
other girls had gathered and I saw
that I was in for it So, commencing
with tho smallest, I kissed each one.
The change in stature was so gradu
al that I did notice that tho last one
was a full-grown woman, aud right
handsome at that, until after I had
kissed her. Looking up, I saw two
or threo old ladies laughing at me,
and thinking I'd mado a bad break.
I lifted my hat to the young lady and
begged her pardon and explained how
it was. She didn't seem to mind it
mucb, but the old ladies kept laugh
ing and I tried to explain it, when
one of them said:
'W'y, durn it. Jedce. she's Bill's
wife."
'Well," I thought, "I'm in for it
That knocks out my voles iu the
neignbornood."
Well, I inquired in tho next bouse
who Bill was, and was told that he
was "Buck" Holmes, tho hardest ci t-
lzeuin uarter-county.
isext day I had to speak at the
courthouse, and when I came up I
noticed a gang of about twenty-live
rough looking fellows on at one side.
and a big, six-foot fellow was talking
to them and gesticulating with both
hands.
"Who's that?" I inquired.
"That's Buck Holmes and his causr."
was the reply.
The cold chills commenced run
ning up my back, and I shifted my
rovolver around where I could reach
it without trouble, -and then lounged-
up to hear what ho was saying and
get the lay of the land.
"Wal, I'm blankely blanked." I
heard him say, "if ther Jedge don't
ketch my vote. No snob thar, gentle
men. Jest as soon kiss a poor man's
wife as a rich one e, by ."
That settled it I got 150 more
votes in that county than any other
man on the ticket Ex-Qoternor

WHY SOME WOMEN RULE THE
HOUSEHOLD.
"Why is it that some women rule
the household?"
"Well, men who make brute force
their sole capital never do much
thinking. They handle a pick, push
a shovel, swing an ax or hold a plow
all day. and when night comes they
are ready for bed. They may take a
mug of beer and smoke a pipe, but
they engage in no pastime that sharp
ens their wits. They move alontr in
the same old rut. year in and year
out, knitting their muscles and necr
lecting their mindk Now women are
naturally brighter and quicker than
men. They are so constituted that
they must talk, and they acquire
ideas through this innate proclivity.
I don't care how crowded a woman
is with work she will find time to
chat over the back fence with her
neighbor's wife. They'll chat when
they're hanging out clothes, walking
in the card en or carry in cr out ashes.
You couldn't make a law strong
enough to keep them from it They
know what's going on and they gos
sip about it If they can't dwell side
by side in unity, they won't keep
quiet as men do. They'll "sass" each
other back and forth, and think up
cutting things to say. If there is a
quarrel with the neighbor, the women
run tho campaign, They chase the
invading pig3 or chickens, order the
offending youngsters home, tell their
side of the story to an interested
community, and if tho nnneighborly
quarrel acquires the dignity of a law
suit it 13 the woman who" retains the
legal counsel and talks' him thin ba-
iure me imng is aone witn. xo do
honest, this same female branch of
the human family cuts a rood deal
more of a figure than it is credited
with."

The Cascades Land Grant.
J "The case of R B. Brenham vs. the
. Northern Pacific railroad, in the mat
' tcr of a desert claim on section 19,
covering a part of the townsite of
j North Yakima, lias been appealed to
j the land commissioner at Washing
ton. Tho brief is quite lengthy, and
recite3 how the United States land
office at Yakima refused to receive
tho filing, quoto3 the entire charter
of the Northern Pacifio railroad and
amendments, and refers to tho profile
maps of withdrawal of lauds granted
on tho various routes along the Co
lumbia, Natches, Yakima, and Skagit
rivers, and claims that the withdraw
als of 1873 and 1879 by the Skagit
and Natches passes conflict with the
route on which tho road is now be
ing' built by the Stampede Pass
and also sets out that not only is seo
tion 19 subject to entry, but the com
pany cannot, under the rulings at
Washington, withdraw lands by more
than one route, but that the entire
grant along the routes of the Cascade
division have reverted to tho govern
ment and the people, for tho reason
that tho corporation failed to con
struct within the term of years pre
scribed by the charter and the acts
amendatory thereof."

Mr. W. Clough, engineer of the
steamer Qoiernor Newell, mail boat
from Aberdeen up tho Chehali3 river,
is registered at the New England. In
conversation with a reporter, .Mr.
Clongh stated that although the
Gray's harbor country, liko the rest
of the coast, feels the effects of the
general depression in business, yet
no ono can really complain. Tho
mill at Aberdeen is running all the
time, and has had no trouble in sell
ing its lumber. That tho logging
camps aie all starting up for the sea
son's work, and that local traffic is
very good. A new mill has lately
been built at tho harbor by some
lumber meu from Michigan, the ma
chinery for which has just been re
ceived, having been shipped around
Cape Horn. Mr. Clough further ob
served that undoultedly tho finest
timber land on the coast, was in the
immediate vicinity of tho harbor, but
most, if not all tho atailablo land had
been taken up. This land, he said,
was unequaled for agriculture aud
pasturage, especially the latter, when
the timber is logged off. "Taking it
all in all," said he, "the future of rne
Chehalis valley and Gray's harbor is
truly a bright one." Seattle Call.
Counterfeiting a Valuable Article.
Tho publisher of tho JTadison
County Record writes from -Hunts-ville,
Ark., as to the effect of Brown's
Iron Bitters on his wifo. Mr. Daugh
orty says, "My wifo has been using
the Bitters for some months; the ef

Ho also writes that owing to coun
terfeits and imitations, it was difficult
to get the genuine article. That diffi

flight. Thoro, as elsewhere, Brown's
Iron Bitters can be had of all the re

tho business interests of Portland, to
invito and facilitate trade by opening
river transportation for the middle
and upper Columbia region "with that
city is ono of real satisfaction, and
we hope that nothing will be found
to hinder a strong interlocking of the
interests of our city with theirs for
mutual advantage. The highlands
have much more interest in seeing
Portland a successful center to a vast
trade than they havo in seeing inland
commerce fix channels with the
Sonnd, and carry its produots to nav
igable waters in another stato or territory.--

An Agusta, Ma, lawyer relates this
story of Henry W. Paine: Ho was a
prosecuting attorney in a criminal
case. The evidence plainly showed
that the respondent was guilty and
tho defense admitted it. The re
spondent's counsel asked for a verdict
of not guilty on tho ground the de
fendant was 72071 compos mentis.
Greatly to tho surprise of Paine and
everybody clso for .that matter the
jnry came in with a verdict of not
guilty. Paine on the instant turned
to the presiding Judgo and said:
