DISGUSTING DIET.
Food of Hungarian Naryles Angelwora
Pot-rio and Snail Soup
SniPPEKSBUKO, April 25. u3Ia yon
der's a man wot's goin' a fishenV
The speaker was a small boy, whoso
parents live in a cabin and cultivate
a small patch of ground in the moun
tains west of this place, near the route
of VanderbiltVproposed South Penn
sylvania railroad.
Ma, was busy washing clothes and
made no roply. The youngster,
impatient of such neglect, deter
mined on a more personal appeal to
her attention.
"Ma, may I go and see him dig
baitr
Go' long," said the materfamilias,
curtly. The boy started off with a
run, but as he approached the object
of his journey he slowed up, as if
awed by a nearer view of the uncouth
individual who was spading the rich
bottom soil Tho man's appearance
was by no means reassuring. In fact
ho looked almost savage. His angu
lar and ungainly form was encased
in coarse garments, apparently the
work of an amateur tailor of the
eighteenth century. Long strag
gling, unkempt hair and beard, and a
scowl on the narrow forehead that
overhung his small, piggish eyes,
made him still less prepossessing.
IS ear tuaman stood a large tin can,
half-filled with tho ordinary earth
worms used for fish-bait Occasion
ally his spade would uncover a fresh
colony ot worms, and with an inartic
ulate grunt the Hungarian digger
Mould pick out as many as he could
catch "while they tried to bury them
selves again and drop them into the
can.
'Mister, may I go a-flshen' with you?"'
asked the small boy, after he had
recovered enough courage to address
the Hungarian.;"!, know a bully hole
down here in the orik," and ho looked
longingly into the can of worms, as
if enjoying the day's sport in antic
ipation. "Me no go a-fishen'," replied the
Hungarian.
"What you goin' to do with the
worms, then, mister?"
"Me make-a worm pot-pie. You
como-a with me, I show you," and he
shouldered the spade and took the
can into his bosom as if it had been
a clean baby.
Too full of supriso to speak, the
boy followed tho Hungarian around
the hill to a row of shanties, where
several other Hungarian were cook
ing. A half -grown Hungarian boy
was busily engaged in cracking snail
shells between stones, as if they were
walnuts, and depositing the snails
in an iron pot for soup. When the
man with the spade and cau arrived,
half a dozen clustered around him
and peeped in to see how many worms
he had, when they gave vent to their
satisfaction in grunts of joy. One of
them tried to drive the boy away, but
a word from the digger made him
shut up.
Tho worms were washed and then
put into an oven, and Hour and lard
placed over them. This was put on
the fire to bake and in half an hour
the worms were ready for a PoloniuB
banqudt not were they eat, but
where they are eaten. The boy was
invited, bnt didn't stay. Seeing was
good enough forhim. Philadelphia

The Trouble Safelj- Ortr.
Stomach trouble is serious busi
ness while it lasts; but what a bless
ed relief to have it depart! Mrs. F. G.
"Wells, of 19 Atlantic street, Hartford,
Conn., writes that she tried Brown's
Iron Bitters for stomach trouble,
and that she experienced such relief
that tho trouble is now entirely over.
She recommends this great iron med
icine to all who are nifiicted. It cures
liver and kidney complaint.
Tho most picturesquely named
place in North Carolina, or perhaps
in any state, is ''Maiden's Bosom,"
Swain county.
