You dance with this world and you'll go to hell with this world. 1 have no respect for Mahone s politics, but I like his answer to the question how much he weighed. Ho said: "I weigh ninety-five pounds, but ninety pounds of this is back bone." Some men think they have back bone, but it is nothing but a cotton string run up their backs. There is more religion in laughing than in crying. If religion consists in crying, I have the best boy in the world. FLY-FISHING FOR SALMON. The Coos Bay News says: ''Sever al salmon have been caught with ar tificial flies on south Coos river lately." If the salmon of this coast would take the fly like those of the eastern provinces of Canada a great many sportsmen would be among our summer guests. The story has long been current among New England sportsmen that, dnring the contro versy between this country and En gland respecting the northwest boundary, a son of' Lord Ashburton visiteu tuis region tuny equippeu ior testing the game qualities of our salmon. When he failed in his pur suit he sent a dispatch to his father saying; "Cede the blamed country to tho Yankees; tho salmon won't rise to a fly." A great many men in the eastern states would estimate the value of the country then in dispute to themselves by the standard alleged to have been employed by young AbIi burton. These men now hud it difli cultto obtain at any price fiahing rights in the provinces. If salmou would rise to the fly in our rivers, there would be no difficulty in ac commodating all the sportsmeu of the country with abundant opportu nities for this lordly sport. As a matter of fact, we believe the ques tion m which the young Englishman was so deeply interested h not yet finally settled. Salmon sometimes do rise to a fly. The Coos Iftws says a boy caught one a short time since on a home-mado fly, which weighed twenty pounds. Salmon fishing for sport may be one of the undeveloped resources of tho Pacific northwest. The state board of education have finally succeeded in purchasing tho property owned by Conrad Snowden and wife, and occupied by the Ore gon school for the blind, and it will hereafter be permanently dedicated to that use and purpose. Tho'price paid was $3,250, which is considered advantageous to all parties interested. The school .closed on Thursday last for the annual summer vacation and the students have left for their re spective homes. "Wonderfal Efficacy." Some people are slow in telling what good things have done for them, but Mr. John P. Daly, of Gillsonville, S. C, says he takes great pleasure in testifying to the wonderful efficacy of Brown's Iron Bitters in dyspepsia, fe ver and ague, and general debility of the system. Ho has personally ex perienced the most satisfactory re sults from the use of this valuable medicine. Make a memorandum of this, all ye whose systems are run down. Brown's Iros Bitters will cure you. SUICIDE. On"Weduesda afternoon the steam- 1 er Jierwtii stunned as usual at John- ! sou's point on her way to Olympia to , ull her tanks with fresh water. While there a man named George Madden came on board and told the captain that his partner, l'obert Mc Kay, had committed suicide by drowning himself, and that lm body had just been discovered on the beach. and he wauted the captain and one or two other members 01 the crew to go with him and look at it. He said that he aud McKay had gone to that place some time before for the pur pose of opening a logging camp, and that they were engaged at present in opening a road into the timber. Mc Kay was a man about 35 years of age, and had been complaining for some time of not being well. On Wednes day morning, after going to work, he spoke of his head aching, and Madden told him to go to the camp and lie down, and he would probably feel belter. At noon when the men went in for their dinner, McKay was miss ing and a search was instiuted, which resulted in the finding of his body on the beach, about 75 yards from the bank. Captain Benson, Chief Denny and Purser Thonjdike of the Jfer icin followed Madden to where the corp3e lay, face up and hands crossed on the breash On examination the body wa3 found to ba perfectly limp. It was carried to tho bank and a watcher placed over it, until the 3fer icin returned next day with Coroner Hartsuck on board. An inquest was then held and the jury returned a verdict according to the facts. Post. ImtUi'jenccr. Body Found. Last Sunday afternoon a roan was found drowned in an eddy on the Washington territory side of tho Co lumbia river, a little above tho mouth of Lake river near St Helens, by a fishermau named Ivulper. The body had been in the water abont two weeks had dark hair, a light mous tache, height about six feet, and seemed to be about twenty-five years of age. Had only one shoe and stocking on; blue overalls and jump er; a porous plaster on chest, and in pocket S57 in coin, a pocket knife and a small piece of paper on whioh was written with indelible pencil "Char les Schutz." The proper authorities wero notified and an inquest was held on the following Monday and the body interred on the bank of the river near where toe body was found.
