SAN 2IARIKO.
A Condensed History of the Smaller De

The Hllle republic o Sau irarino is j
inclosed in the kingdom of Italy. It
is bounded on tbo north, cast aud j
south by the province of 1'orli and S
on the west by that ot Pesaro. Its
territory covers about twenty-two
square miles. The population num
bers 8,000 souls, and the capital, San
Marino, has 1,200. It is perched on a j
summit of a mountain called Mount
Titan, or the Giants, which sometimes
leads to this little state being termed j
the Titanic rennblic. Its oripin dates
from the fonrth century, and for her-

The escutcheon is snrround-
edby flags and surmounted by a
crown indicating a sovereign state.
The republic has an order of chivalry,
created if 1833, under the name ot Or
der of San Marino. It consists of a
Greek cross with towers r.t the four
angles, and iu the center a medallion
with the arms of the republic sur
mounted by a princely crown, closed
and suspended by a striped blue and
white ribbon. These are the national
colors.
In 179G Bonaparte, after defeating
the Austrians, sent the celebrated
mathematician Mongo to compliment
the free mountaineers and make them
oflera of aggrandizement, bnt they
very politely and very prudently de
clined. When Italy became a king
dom Xapoleou desired to preserve
this small state intact. "It is a rare
sample of a republic to preserve,"
said the emperor. In ""SIO Garibaldi,
driven from Rome by General Oudin
ot, took refuge in Sau Marino, for
bidding his soldiers to do any harm
lo the inhabitants. Victor Emmnu
uel not only respected the liberty of
the institutions of tins little country,
bnt always showed it great sympa
thy, especially on his visit to Bologna
nt the timo of tho inauguration of the
Aucona railway in 1SG1. In 18G2 n
treaty of customs and commerce was
concluded between Italy and the re
public. San Marino owes its foundation io
a hermit of that name, born in Dal
matia in the fourth century aud who
went to Italy to work as a mason at
the rebuilding of tho walls of Eimini.
Marino afterward took refuge iu the
midst of the woods on Mount Titan
and constructed there a cabin, in
which ho ended his days. Tho place
whero ho expired soon became the
object of pilgrimages and houses
wore bnilt there, which ultimately
formed the town ot San Marino.
The fete of tho saint is celebrated on
tho 4th of September. Philadelphia
