Skirling along the dikes wo had a good opportunity of seeing some of the incessant toil, some of- the constant engineering and battling with the sea, to keep it at anything like a safe dis tance. The dikes abont this island are perhaps the finest, the most con stantly guarded in all the country. The dike workers aro a distinct class a guild, in fact, jealous of their craft and its rights and privileges. It is not the first-comer who may be :i regular diko worker, oven if he should wish to be. Wo saw great gangs of them going from- point to point with pick and shpvel, ever on the lookont for weak spots in the great embankment, ever rofaciug it with miles of concrete, and strength ening every point with strong groins running into tho sea. It was almost pathetic to note with what solicitude' every blade ot the binding bent gras3 was coaxed to grow. Ever little tuft was watched and tended as if it was some choice tulip. The top of the dike formed a level, firm road, stretching away for miles, ihe sea looked sjo mild and gray and innocent as it gently lapped theedges of tho mighty barriers that it seemed an effort to fancy it an ene my capable of mischief. The breezes were simply delicious and fresh, com ing over the wide North sea. Inland the scenery was flat and grim and se rious. Fnrmsteads in the far dis tance looked green and fat enough. Sheep and kino were plentiful about the rich fields. Just over ihe edge of the dykes were tho little scattered hamlets of the fisher people and tho poldermen: the dyke workers Jived more of a roving life, carapiug ont here and there as their work called them from one point to another. Sometimes tho wind had blown up and the seas tossed up great long meandering mound- of sand, helping to hack and strengthen the dykes. On these billowy hillocks the grass was carefully planted in little regular tnfts, and stunted pines were sd wherever the tempest would spare them to grow. All sorts of biudiug vegetation were carefully protected. The very children knew enough to let it alone. There are watchers ever on the lookont, day and night, calm and storm. No wonder that the set, anx ious look one sees on even.' face, that Eeems to ba born with every baby, should be tho only characteristic ex pression ono. remarks among the people here: hen the watchers at tho dykes see the danger the alarm bell is rung, and every soul either flies to the dikes for safety or to help the gangs of workers to stop tho threatened breach. All sounds and sights were of peace and cahn, and yet there somehow came upon the imagination the grim reverse of the picture, the clanging alarm-bell, the hurry to and fro, the wild flight for safety from the mad, hungry sea. We were feeling deadly oppressed by the prevailing seriousness of the place. Gcoryc 11. Houghton in Ifur- M. S. Hauckel, of Umatilla county, has been held to answer for stealing lumber from the Umatilla reserva tion. Some time since one Berkley was arrested for cutting timber on the reservation and fined 8300, which ho paid. He had cut the timber into boards at his mill, and this he sur rendered also. Tho Indiau commis sioner ordered it sold and the pro ceeds divided among the Indians. Hanckel went to Berkley and offered to take away the lumber and give him ouerlhird. So Berkley gave Hanckle a paper conveying Ins right to tho Inmber, which was no right at alL Hanckel took away tho lumber and was arrested for stealing it. He was examined and held to answer bv Fred Page-Tustin of Pendleton, and will be tried before ,iuuge Deady. Berklevlms also bpen arrested, but just what will he done with hint has not been decided. Coughs and colds can bo cured without narcotics. Use Red Star Cough Cure. Some ot the papers aro just finding out that Mrs. Hoyt and Miss Cleve land, sisters of President Cleveland, aro Kepublicans. The fact is that every ono of the Cleveland family, save Grover, is a Republican. Tole do JJlade A prominent cattle man of Port land says, now that the cattle ranges of eastern Oregonhaye been thor oughly examined, it is found that ,the loss by the severo storm of last winter is very smalL A party of herders in a five days ride over the ranges on the Deschutes saw only four dead cattle. Stock is plenty, grass is good and the demand from eastern cattle buyers liberal. There will be an immense clip of wool, fruit and vegetables of all kinds promise a great yield and tho grain crop bids fair to be the best ever known. And the outlook is very prom ising for a good crop of wars this season. The ory ot hard time3 need not bo raised in Oregon. Hcotl'aKmulHleH efPuro Ced Liver Oil, -with HypepkesphlteH. In Acute Pulmonary Troubles. Dr. F. B. Strickland, New "York, says: 4L find "your Emulsion very beneficial after all acute pulmonary attacks in adults, and iu children during aud after such diseases." SUBTERRANEAN WOODS. Clarence Demiug, in the "By-ways of Nature and Life," says of the swampy region of southern Iew Jersey: "The huge trees which Ho under the swamp to unknown depths aro of the white cedar variety, an evergreen, known scientifically" ns Cypresses Thyoides. They grew years ago in the fresh water, which is necessary for their subsistence, and when in time, cither by a subsidence of tho land or a rise of the seas the salt water reached them they died in numbers. But many of them ere they died fell over as living trees, and wero covered slowly "by deposits of muck and peat which fill the swamp. These trees that fell over by the root, and known as 'widfalls,' to distinguish them from the 'breakdowns,' are the ones most sought for commercial use, and they are found and worked as follews: The log-digger enters the swamp with a sharpened iron rod. He probes in the soft soil until he strikes a tree, probably two or three feet below the surface. In a few minutes he finds tho length of the trunk, how much still remains firm wood, and at what place the first knots, which will stop the straight 'split' necessary for shin gles, begin. Still using his prod, like tho divining rod of a magician, he manages to secure a chip, and by the smell knows whether the tree" is a 'windfall' or a 'breakdown.' Then he inserts in the mud a saw like that used by ice-cnttors, and theu saws throngh the roots and :uuck until the log is reached, 'ihe top and roots are tints sawed off, a ditch dug over tho tree, tho trunk loosened, and soon the great stick, sometimes five or six feet long, is brought to the surface aud is split by hand and worked into shingles, as well a3 into staves used for pails and lub3. The wood has a cross grain which splits as straight as an arrow. The shingles made from it last sixty or seventy years, are eagerly sought "by builders in south ern New Jersey, and command in the market a much higher price than or dinary shingles made of pino or chestnut, which last for roofing usu ally not more than twenty or twenty five years, lu color, the wood of tlio white cedar is a delicate pink, and has a strong flavor, resembling that of tho rod cedar, used in making lead pencils. Tho trees, once fairly buried iu tho swamp, never become waterlogged, as is sjiown by their floating in the ditches as soon as they are pried up, aud "what is more sin gular, as soon as they rise they turn invariably with their undersiilo up permost. Theso two fatsaro myste I so. Thi men who nHgh'orlegs'if and split them earn their money. The "work is hard, requiring, beside Inst manual labor, skill and experi ence; the swamp3 are soft and treach orous, no machinery can bo used, and long stretches of mnd and water must bo covered with boughs or bark before the shiugles can reach tho vil laga and civilization." A singular accident with fatal re sults occurred Tuesday, tho 21st inst., on the government jetty at tho en trance to Yaquina bay. Tho victim was Porte Patterson, a voting man employed to drive a horsoattached to a car used in hauling stone along a tramway, in some manner which will never be explained, Patterson fell off the car and the tramway, but did not lose his hold of tho lines. In falling the horse was thrown down, and he began kicking violently. He knocked from tho car a heavy Btone, which fell on Patterson's breast. crushing iu ihe ribs and inflicting such injuries that the poor man died four hours lator. He leaves no rela tives except a sister, he being her only support. The horse struggled for some time, but finally fell off the tramway and broke his neck. Neuiij)2pfr ISeport of the Bl;r liinutr.
