Cam. Jso O'Bbiex, commander of
tho steamer City of Mexico, was ar
rested in New York last Thursday on
a charge of supplying arms and mu
nitions of war to the insurgents of a
country at peace with this govern
ment. Tho steamer was seized and is
now in the possession of tho federal
authorities. Tho manifest should the
cargo consisted of lumber, but, in re
ality, the vessel was loaded with fire
arms for the insurgents of Colombia.
Tho stoamer was chartered by the
agents of the insurgents. The pen
alty of the crime is 310,000 fine, or
threo years' imprisonment and confis
cation of the vessel.

TnE Northern Pacific railway have
begun suit in the United States cir
cuit court of New York, against the
Oregon and Transcontinental com
pany for the recovery of 628,097, with
interest from December SI, 1883,
which it claims to bo due on balance
of accounts. The Oregon and Trans
continental company has a claim of
several millions against tho Northern
Pacific, and it is believed a counter
suit will bo instituted. Tho directors
of the Northern Pacific were in ses
sion several hours on Thursday. It is
a&id the Oregon and Transcontinental
account was taken up and a resolu
tion passed relieving tho committee
having it in charge from further duty.
The session was long and exciting.
Strong efforts wore made to rescind
the action, but without avail. Tho
president of the Oregon and Trans
continental said the aotion was a
frest surprise to him.

in April.
