PRINTERS 3IISTAKES.
Painstaking people, vrlio kiiov
nest to nothing of printing, find a
special delight in searching out typo
graphic errors in newspapers, period-
icals and books, tho detection of a !
blunder, in their own estimation, put
ting a.prenin;m on individual intel
ligence conferring a privilego of
disparaging printers. Men of iutel
licreiicp. who vrrito well hut not letri-
bly, never tire of pointing out mis- J
takes of printers and the oversight j
of proof-readers. The self-constituted
censors of typography may find
food for -wholesome reflection in tho .
fact that just aoout one hundred
yeirs aso a number of professors in
theEJinburg tmivarsity undertook!
the publication o a book -vrhichf
should be a perfect specimen of typo- j
gr lphical accuracy. Every conceiva-!
ble precaution was taken to prevant j
errors of the type. Six experienced
proof-readers were employed, who de
voted hours to the reading of each
page. After their careful task was
completed, each page was posted in
the hall of tbe university, with a notifi
cation that 50 would be paid to any
person who should succeed in discov
ering an error. Every page remained
thus publicly exposed" for two weeks
before beiug returned to the printing
office. The proprietors of tho work
felt confident that tbe object so dili
gently striven for had been attained.
Great was the discomfiture of the
learned men when, on tho book being
issued, several errors were found, ono
occurring in the first line of tho first
page.
