Sta ASTOHIA, -OBECOX. THE SOUDAN. Does nuvbodv renieniber that there was once a gallant .Christian soldier named Gordon, who was treacherous ly murdered by Arabs at a place called Khartoum? There was an impres sion that a British army under the KICUIDUUIIUI UL IUU U(i:t OJU1U ll"WC- !oy the mau who declared that "Mr." Grnnt would soon bo forcotten. while General Lee would live forever was I dispatched to Egypt to rescue Gor don, or at least to avengo his death. "We have a faint recollection of the de parture ot certain crack English reg iments for the battle-fields of the Soudan, the guards, among others, around whose brawny necks the fair est of the London girls hung weep ing as the band phned martial airs iiuu iiiu uitru ticui iuiiu iu uu ui u: for their country. Has anybody any idea what has become of this army and of the great work it was sent to accomplish? At latest dates Lord Wolseley, un der a large sun umbrella, was travel ing leisurely down the .Nile toward Cairo, where Mr. Shepherds suc cessor keeps a capital hotel with ub. and s." always on ico. His army was ciicainped near Korti, with the sun at 130 degrees at midday, and delight mlly cool nights, with a thermometer at 102 degrees. The mortality was not excessive. Tho doctors said that if tho army wero moved by tho. fall fully half" of them would bo alive. There was another British urmywhioh landed at Suakem and was going to march to Berber and lay a railroad every foot of tho way. It has marohed forth several times and won victories every time, but it is noticed after every victory it always falls back whenco it started. The railway is not selling through tickets to Berber as yet The very latest piece of news from the Soudan is that Wolseley, with half his army,'' has been ordered to prepare to move to India. Tho ques tion suggests itself, Which half? It can't be the half which tho dootors say aro laying their bones' under the calcined sands of the desert; and yet, if tho surviving half is meant, how is it to bo got out of its present trap? If tho army from Suakem cau't get in, how can thjo army ou the Nile get out? Will El Muudi be forbearing enough to let the Englishmen escape th e way they came. It is a wretched busi nes3 and re flects deep disgraco on England, on Mr. Gladstoue and on General Wol seley. Never before in all England's history, was a gallant soldier sent forth on a mission of peace and good will and massaored by savages with out at least some effort to avenge his death. Never before was Great Brit ain so short ot military talent that she was forced to intrust the flower of her army to a man whoso highest conception of the business of a sol dier is tho packing of a knapsack and the fastening of a gaiter. Wo had, Heaven knows, at tho beginning of tho war some wretched pretenders in the rank of general, but we never had a man so unfit as Wolseley, nor did wo ever, in our darkest hours, leave an American soldier to bo murdered in cold blood, or get a body of our choicest troops into a scrape from which nothing but extraordinary for bearance on tho part of the enemy can extricate them. Sparks, the new land commission er, has decided to issue no more pat ents in cases of desert-land or timber-culture claims, until a general in vestigation can be had. A StariUns IHseovery. Physicans are often startled by re mark'able discoveries. Tlie fact that Dr. King's New Discovery for Uon.sumption and all Throat and Lung diseases Is daily curing patients that they have given up to die, is startling them to re alize their sense of duty, and examine into the merits of this wpnderful dis covery l resulting in hundreds of our best rhj-siclanausincit in their practice Trial Bottles free atW.E.
