WILL ENGLAND FIGHT'
The question seems to narrow itself
down to this Will England eat dirt
or fight? When the Bussians, over n
month ago, advanced to Pnl-i-Kah-
tum,
a, their justification j for V,C: en-
cro
aenmenr, says the wtToairr, v.ns
mat tno Afghans had occupied Peiij-, but that he proved to be guided bv .
deh, and that. tho advance of their, jl,e rules of the land ollice. The r
enemy byonojoadinvolved n Russian question wa whether the depart- -ndvanco

prompt to disavow any intention of
ffrritnrinl
aggrandizement On the
30th of March they took Penideh and
drove out the Afghans. Still the
Journal de M. Petersburg assured
tiie world tnat. tlie mcideut had no
significance, and that iho Rupsian
government had no desiro to annex
the territory belonging to its neigh
bors. Great Britain asked an expla
nation of the agressive movement
of General KomarofT. The emperor
replied that he could give no expla
nation nntil he had himself received
an explanation from Goueral Koma
rofT. which woltld take sixty dava.

- . - ... . HV .MWMUW.M.W
rank gave h.imrin fact, supreme con
trol in the territory which may be
come tho seat of war. Has not the
farce gone on long enough?
If England has any of her auoient
spirit left there is but one course to
pursue. She must fight and fight
promptly. She is already discraced
in the Soudan, where one of her most
gallant soldiers has been murdered by
a band of Redonins, and the army
which was sent to rescue him is bot
tled up in the most ridiculous way in
the deserts. If now she submits to
Russian atrcression and allows her
self to be fooled into moro diplo
matic controversy, the sooner she ab
dicates her claim to be a first-class
power, the better. There is no neces
sary disgrace in being unable or un
willing to fight. .Members of tho
peace society are quite respectable
people. But they don't go around
masquerading in military disguise.
It is quite possible Great Britain
would rather go on selling pots and
pans to Russia than fight her. It is
all a matter of taste.
The only trouble is that the old ad
dage about the man who fights and
runs away living to fight another
day is liable to come true in this case
in very short order. If England
don't fioht for Herat she will have to
fight for Delhi, and if she don't fight
for Delhi she may have- to fight for
Calcutta. The Indian empire is at
stake. If the British leave tho Af
ghans to their fate the entire Mo
hammedan population1 of northwest
India will fly to arms. Their only
motive for submitting to British oon
trol ras that England was all-powerful
and that her sworii was always
drawn. If now tbejjword turns out
to be a shepherdess' crook, the Mo
hammedans of Hindustan will quick
ly shake of the British yoke. With
that class of people it is pluck that
wins.
A PATHETIC INCIDENT.
The Greenville Ban ner tells the fol
fowing pathetic story of how con
ductor Frazer of the International
and Great Northern railroad tried to
fight off death a few hours in order
that he might see bis wife once more.
He had been shot by a tramp, and
had been takori to Tyler, Texas, in a
dying conditien:
"Help me to fight back this
cruel death, boys, until mv wifo
gets here, said the dying man,
SST&. JsnftTS
hours. With n oalm couraco ho
heard the verdict, and called all of
his wonderful force to his aid in tho
struggle to live until his wife -.rrived.
"Tell me exciting atones," he said
to tho boys around lus bed. ,for I
must make this xun till she comes!"
And-the boys did laugh and tell bio-
stories, poor fellows, when theirstout
hearts were- filled with sad regret.
The hours sped rapidly by; the merry
voice of tho conductor grew fainter
and fainter, but his courage never
faltered. A telegram from his wife
in answer to one sent her some hours
before was brought into the room
and read. She-was coming on a spe
cial train, the road was cleared for
her passage, and with lightning speed
her train was annihilating distance.
What a raco! A young woman in the
full flush of love and a new life, pit
ted against the king of terrors. The
news nerved 3?razor for a moment
and his efforts to'keop up wero re
newed. A little later another tele
gram. "Old boy' whispered a brake
man, "She will bo here in an hour."
Good God! But one short hour to
wait to live! "Turn mo over, boys,"
lid said. It was done. He whispered
to an attendant: "Oharloy, I cannot
run on this .schedule goodbyr Ho
was dead in an instant. Ju3t thirty
one minutes later a beautiful young
woman bent over the prostrate form,
and, finding no life there, broke out
in one of those wild wails which, tell
all too well that hope in life is done.

Another point to which Mr. Lamar
may not err in devoting a little atten

figured iu important cases as counsel
for railway corporations. Now a law
yer does not necessarily sell his soul
when ho accepts a fee to plead a case
