Desperate FIghtlnjr.
Gobk, April 15.-The priuco of
Wales arrived in this citv to-dav.
The Sun .as.shinW Whtly
tne weatner was au mat.coma oe ae-
aired for such' an occasion. The rail
way station and the streets in tho,
vicinity were crotvded with people
awaiting the arrival of the royal par
ty. Yhen the train bearing them
drew into the station it was greeted
with hearty cheers. Au address of
welcome was delivered, and much
enthusiasm prevails.
The prince and princess of Wales
did not repeat their Dublin triumph
in Cork. Everything within the pow
er of the loyalists to do was done to
make the reception a success, and
the managers of the demonstration
remained up the most part of tho
night to make suro of their arrange
ments. "When tho prince and prin
cess emerged from the "rail way station,
alter their arrival in the city, they
were greeted with ohegr after cheer.
During their progress "Si the parade,
workmen and boys ran alongside their
carriage and kept up cheering to
drown the hisses of the nationalists,
who lined the entire route and made
a continual demonstration. The con
duct of the leaguers aroused the loy
alists to a high pitch of enthusiasm,
and they made the streets roar with
shouts of welcome. The wonder is
that there was no violent breach of
the peace during the royal progress,
for it was proceeded amid a continual
warfare of wordsand taunts between
loyalists and nationalists, whose num
bers were equally divided. It is
thought that the presenco of the
princess and her ladylike gracious
ness to the people along tho streets
was the element that conquered Irish
gallantry. John O'Connor, national
ist member of parliament for Tippe
rary, marched at tho head of the
procession of leaguers, who olosoly
followed tho royal procession and
sang "God Save Ireland" every time
the loyalists or their bands started
up "God Save the Queen.1
London, April 15. Up to this oven
ing there was a feeling of relief in
government circles over news from
Cork, which all tended to show that
the visit of tho prince of "Wales to
that city had passed off quietly, and
had evoked an unexpected amount of
enthusiasm. Early in tho evening
government officials declared the at
tempts of the nationalists to organize
an opposition had resulted in a failure,
and the extent of the loyalist demon
stration was surprising. These dec
larations were hardly uttered before
the telegraph brought reports of riot
ing in various parts of the city, and
the reports are becoming more alarm
ing every hour. As the open car
nage containing tho prince woo cross
ing Parnell bridge somo one in the
crowd threw an onion at his royal
highness. The missile missed the
Ennce but hit one oi tno footmen be
ind the carriage, and tho crowd
cheered.
During the afternoon a detective
arrested a man who was throwing
stones at the loyalists' procession,
A mob speedily formed and attempted
to rescue the prisoner. Tho detective
fired his revolver, but withont hittiDg
anyone, and succeeded in taking his
prisoner to the police court, where
he was promptly released on bail fur
nished by tha mayor of Cork.
Early in the evening the national
ists held' a mass meeting where in
flammatory speeohea were made and
the latest London newspapers con
taining accounts of the royal progress
were burned in a bonfire. After the
mass meeting the nationalists Boat
tered through the city in parties of
from fifty to five hundred men. Doors
aud windows were smashed, flags and
decorations were torn down and
heaped on blazing'bonfires, and many
gun stores wero broken into, for the
purpose of arming the mob. Polioo
men, when encountered singly or in
small squads, were attack'ed and beat
en unmercifully with their own
truncheons. In many cases the po
lice rallied and oharged 'desperately
upon the mob, but they were invaria
bly surrounded and repulsed. The
police then resorted to a free uso of
their revolvers and bayonets. It was
hand-to-hand fighting of the most
desperate sort, the police standing
back and receiving and mulcting ter
rible injuries.
At midnight the streets wore prac
tically in possession of the.mob. Tho
policemen who remained uninjured
could not attempt to do more than
maintain their position and fight on
tho defensive.
q addition to attacks from crowds
in the streets, the police were exposed
to numerous volleys of stones from
windows, house tops and other points
of vantage. The belief at midnight
was that the Btreets could not be
cleared without the use of artil
lery. London, April 16,4 A.M.--The ri
oting at Cork has been suppressed.
Many arrests wero made, and the
hospitalsre full of wounded police
men and rioters.

War Rnniiu'o and I'i'oliulitlitic
London, April 1G.- The St. reters-
hB correspondent of the Times says
alarminfj rumors ore circulntinfj. and

ther conflicts will soon be reported
from the Afghan frontier as it is
thought unlikely that the Afghans
will allow their recent defeat to pass
without seeking revenge. He con cen
tinues: "Russia makes no secret of.
her intention of invading Afghanis
tan, if the Afghans compel her to do
so. The general opinion here is that
England is committing herself in
forming an alliance with the ameer
without having absolute control. An
order has been sent to Cronstadt to
get ready within a fortnight forty
war ships, including torpedo boats.
The Post has reason to believe the
government has received unsatisfac
tory dispatches from St. Petersburg.
Russia insists on retaining the posi
tions she has already occupied, and
instimates thai .unless England holds
Tierself responsible for the acquies
cence oi tne ameer in ineso auvunces
General KomaroiT will advance and
secure Herat The Post also hears
that the Afghans at Penjdeh wero
surprised by the recent attack and
a ruthless massacro followed.
Notwtihstanding the Post's rumors,
other papers here and on tho conti
nent, including those at St Peters
burg, all express the opinion that the
prospects of peace are brighter.
The Neics says nothing has occur
red to qualify the hopes of peace al
ready expressed.
Tho Standard says that even ru
mors in relation to the conditions of
a settlement aro afloat, and that am
bassadors at Londou have notified
their respective governments tint
they consider a rupture averted.
The Times editorial says: ''It now
appears beyond doubt that the Rus
sian government was apprised of the
Penjdeh battle by April 3d. While
the British government is waiting for
explanations it is quite possiblo Gen
eral Komaroff is pushing forward,
under telegraphic orders from St
Petersburg."
A letter to the Time from Gulran
says: .Sir Peter Lumsden's with
drawal from the frontier would be
tho signal for the immediate seizure
of Herat by the Russians, and would
lose the support of tho Afghans, who
even now suspect both the ameeer
and England of -treachery.- - "J

Paris, April 15. The LaPaix says
that in event of. war between England
and Russia, othor powers, especially
France, must remain strictly neutral.
LaPaix hints that such au agree
ment already exists.
JBebltn, April lo. Telegrams re
ceived hero from St. Petersburg say
that General KomaroiT has stated
that the Afghans refused to obey the
orders of the English officers to with
draw from their advance positions.
London, April 15. Gladstone's ap
parent hesitation over tho luishk
river affair has emboldened Russia
and she is now taking her turn in de
manding explanations and withdraw
als. The report is confirmed that
Degicrs has demanded an explana
tion of the presenco of Captain Yates
of General Lumsden's staff at the
Knshk river battle and of tho part he
is said to have taken in provoking
that engagement. Special dispatches
from St Petersburg even assert that
Russia has demanded the recall of
General Lumsden himself ou the
ground of his pronounced sympathy
with the Afghans in their hostility
towards. Russia, but tho statement is
doubtful.
Vienna, April 15. The Tageblatt
seys: 'The last days of England's
power would bo also the last days of
European liberty. Ono cannot un
derstand German sympathy for Rus
sia, whose outgrowth would certainly
imperil Germany."
