explore the Putnam river from the
point -where, ahout four hundred
miles from its mouth, the previous
exploration terminated, and will also
explore inland throughout Northern
Alaska. The expedition is under the
direction of tho hureau-of navigation.
Besides the Yukon andPutnam rivers,
the natives say that Alaska has an
other great river which has not been
explored by white men. That anoth
er large river exists is credited The
Patnnm river runs in the general di
rection of west south-west. It has
not been found difficult of navigation
for 400 miles, except at-rapids, where
it has been necessary to pull stores,
etc., over in boats of skiu. The coun
try on the banks of the river is gen
erally wooded .and rolling. The river
empties into the sea, through a delta,
io which there are about n dozen
mouths, the longest of which begins
about 40 miles up the stream. About
twenty-five miles of the country are
cut tip by the delta. The results of
the exploration will be topographical
aud hydrographic charts, and the bu
reau of navigation will be placed in
possession of full information about
the contour of the country, about
mountain ranges.tho depth of water in
the river,and, generally speaking, the
resources of the couutry.
Unlike the Siberian coast, the Alas
kan country produces enough to make
itself, in the language of tho explor
ers, "self-supporting." That iy, the
explorers need have no fear or famine,
during most of ths year, should disas
ter befall them. The forests are
dense and abound in vegetation.
Game of every description is plenty.
From certain nutritions roots the na
tives make food. In places tho salm
onberries, which taste not unlike
strawberries, are found. The winter
brings the mercury down to sixty de
grees below zero; but in the spring
and summer tho temperature of
northern Alaska is agreeable, accord
ing to the explorers. While the com
ing expedition means that there will
be a great deal of work to perform,
tho dangers to be encountered are
not noceeaarily great. "The risks,"
said one of the officers, are only those
inoident to the exploration of any new
country. We go for n trip of about
eighteen months. We shall have pro
visions sufficient to last us for three
years. During the summer, the open
season, we shall push ahead with the
steamer, making trips of observa
tion and surveying also into the in
terior. In the winter we shall ex
plore with sledges, wrapped up in
fur conts. There will be two months
of Arctic darkness when we will be
unable to explore. The most dan
gerous part of our previous expedi
tion wae getting to and from Alaska.
We shall probably leave San .Fran
cisco about the first of ATay, and take
a nativo interpreter at St. Michaels.

tivas never saw a white man before
our previons expedition arrived
among them."
The Soudan, according to a corre
spondent writing to American Regis
ter, Paris, from Cairo, and, taking the
term to comprise tho whole area of
Egypt proper, is an area of fertile,
tillable, well-watered land, equal at
least to the great states of Xew York,
Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Illi
nois. Dr. Schweinfurth says that iu
these remote regions he never saw
a country teeming with a more thick
ly settled and industrious popula
tion. At Oregon City, Henry Witkrow has
obtained a verdict of $15,000 against
the Oregon and California Railroad
company, for damages sustained by
his infant child, which was thrown
from the arms of its mother whL'e
she was alighting from the train, and
falling under the car wheels, had
both of its legs cut off. The engi
neer started the train before the lady
had got entirely off the car.

terms of the convention, he might
have done. The Afghans fought iu

last fled iu wild confusion, leaving all
their artillery and trains in the hands
of KomarofT, as well ns many of their
dead aud wounded." Respecting
Komarofl, Kaulbars said: "In rank
he is n lieutenant-general, and a mom
berof the general staff. Iu the army
ho is known as a most cautious and
almost timid commander, and though
not fearing danger, he fears to take
the responsibility of action." Kaul
bars cencluded: "I personally do not
believe there will be war." ..
London, April 13. Tho Daily
Nctcx, in an editorial this morning,
says: "The situation bIiows a more
peaceful tendency, bnt though the
intentions of Russia are good now,
we cannot assume that they will be
carried out. Events have simplified
England's task. If war is to be
avoided it mnst be shown that the
Afghans, not the Russians aro blama
ble for the collision, and also that
Komaroffs action is no part of tho
Russian policy. Then there must be
no further Russian advance. If Rus
sia is as anxious for peace as England
is, neace ought to be secure."
Nkw Oklevn's, April 11. Captain
Doane of tho steamship Heredia,

Victoria, April 14. ReporLs from
the interior state that 5,000 employes
of the Canadian Pacific railway have
gone on a strike, on account of not
receiving their wages.
Union City, Tenn., April 14.
Rudd Farriss, white, and Freeman
Ward, colored, were hanged at the
fair grounds early this morning by a
mob of 200 men. It is charged that
Farriss aud Ward belonged to a gang
of thieves who have committed many
depredations.
Philapelvhia, April 11. -The
Times savs John Roach has been of
fered $10,003 more for the dispatch
boat Dolphin than this government
has agreed to give. The offer comes
from the Russian government, and
Roach has demanded an immediate
nnswer to his letter requesting final
payment by the United States.
