The former bnsy town of "Mammoth in Meno couniy, Cal., is described as follows in the Bodie Free Press: From the Pnnch Bowl, six miles from Williams raucb, snow continues to Mammoth, the average depth ot which is about three feet No signs of animal lifo anywhere. Snow ceases at Casa Diablo Springs, and Long valley southward is clear as far as the eye can reach. Teams from Bishop creek can get within three miles of Mammoth. " Not a soul to be seen in the old town of Mammoth. Houses overthrown by wind, tables, chairs, beds, etc., in wild confusion. Koof breaking and broken down un der weights of snow; clinging doors and shattered windows showing the deserted interiors. The once lively streets filled with broken odds and ends incident to a hasty departure. Lying around in every direction are chairs, tables, counters, shelving, sa- Ioou-bara, mining tools, old wagons, stoves and pipes, etc. Forlorn saloon signs and tattered Chinese hiero glyphics flutter in the wind. The old tramway is broken down and scat tered. The old Mammoth mill bat tery and pan room has caved in upou the machinery. Offices, stables and boarding houses are in good condi tion. An immense lot of wood lies piled at the foot of the tramway and milK Mineral Park and Pine City present the same appearance as de scribed above. The snow is from four to five feet deep, and on the big lake it is three feet with four feet of ice. Boats ot all kinds lio half hur ried on the banks. The west side of the Mammoth hill is free from about two-thirds of the summit down. About a fortnight before Christ mas the yacht Iolanthc, with three men on board, sailed out of Port Philip bay, Victoria, and was never seen again. On the 26th of Decem ber a hngo shark was caught at Frankstown, a small village near Mel bourne. Some of the loungers on the beach facetiously suggested that rel ics of the missing crew might be looked for inside the fish. The shark, therefore, was cut open, and in its stomach were actually found a human hand, a mass of sodden rags, a bro ken wooden pipe and a gold watch and chain. The watch was immedi ately recognized as having belonged to one ot the yachtmen who had been on board the JolahtJie. The president has directed that the pay of seamen apprentices on cruis ing vessels shall be as follews: First class, S21 per month; second class, S18 per month. This is to carry into effect the navy department circular of January 19, 1SS5, authorizing ap prentice boys on board cruisers to be promoted by commanding officers to occond class at the end of one year of the ciuise, and to first class at the end of the second year, on tho rep6rt ot a board of their proficiency as sea men physically and professionally. A youth of sixteen years, failing to fiud a minister in Middleboro, Mass., wlTero he resided,' who would perform the marriage ceremony for him and the thirty-seven-year-old girl ho had been smitten by, took his bride-elect, and started a few days ago forEljodo Island to try his luck in that snug little commonwealth, but his unsym pathetic father had him arrested be fore he reached tho border.
