HEZ CATLKS. Columbia City. Or., April 12. 18-5. Yesterday's Washington Post prints an interview between Captain Coucb, leader of the Oklahoma boomers, and the secretary of the interior, in re gard to Oklahoma. Secretary Lamar said: "What is it you wish?" "I want to know what course the administration has determined to pursue with refrenco to Oklahoma and the settlers," replied Captain Couch. "Well, sir, I will stale to you the policy of this administration with re gard to this Oklahoma country," said the secretary. "It considers the Ok lahoma territory, on which the per sons you represent are proposing to make settlements, as within the part of Indian territory. The admin istration regards it as not a part of the public domain, open to entry and settlement and acquisition of titles under the laws of the United States. Being Indian country that is terri tory acquired and reserved for Indi an occupancy the government is pledged to the protection of the In dians from intruders. No white per sons have a right to go there ana re side without a permit, and when 'they , go they are intruders, who are there illegally and wrongfully. The policy of the president is to ex ecute the pledge of the govern ment, and to protect this territory from intrusion of white persons who claim they have a right to enter upon it and that it was public domain, subject to preemption and homestead settlement." "Is that the final decision?" asked Capt Couch. "It is, and it will be enforced," re plied Mr. Lamar. In reply to further questions, Sec retary Lamar suid the administra tion was determined there should bo no more cattle men on the reserva tion. They will uot be permitted to graze cattle within the limits of that territory. He repeated this declara tion with emphasis. The recrisler and the receiver of the United State3 land office at Walla Walla have received a telegram from Commissioner Sparks, revoking the order of Acting Commissioner Harri son, dated March 20, changing- the terminal limits of the Northern Pa cific railroad in this vicinity. It is believed that the revocation of the order has been secured by misrepre sentation. Groat indignation and uneanness are everywhere manifest. Sottlers who have purchased railroad lands, who feel that their homes are imperiled, are flocking in and discov ering various means of protecting their rights, and some even swear they will hang or shoot the first man or laud-shark who tries to jump their lands. It -was the settlers in the first place who demanded the change, and not the railroad company. GOTO Mrs. Malcolm's Millinery Parlors FOR SPRING AND SUMMER HATS. Clothing.
