The Btory is told, and it is good as a story, that the French sent their officials through the country with in structions to ascertain the names of the rivers, uionntains, ruins, etc. On the completion of the map a very large proportion of the places were found to bear the name "Ma'arifsh." The proportion was unnaturally large, aud it was strange that ruins and rivers and mountains should all be called "Itfa'arifsh." Yet all the explorers solemnly assured the au thorities that upon addressing the na tives out of their phrase book in the set sentence, "What is the name of that place?'' the Berber, or Zlass, or other Arab had replied, "ITa'arifsb." The3e mountains and rivers and ob jects of interests were, in fact, al la belled with the interesting name (m Arabic) "Don't know." "Hirer Don't know," the Don't-know mountains," Oued Ma'arifsh, Diebei Ma'arifsh. The Omaha Bee inquires: "Who ever heard of Phelps who is to repre sent this country at St Jamesf which query causes the Chicago News to rise and remark: "Great cosh! has it come to pass that a man has to be indorsed by the sheep ranches of Ne braska before he can serve his native land? It was a Nebraska man, we believe; who once opposed the build ing of a new schoolhouse because the young folks were getting their heads too fall of larnin'. 'When.' said he, 'I was livin' back in New Hampshire, thar was a boy by the name of Daniel Webster lived on the farm nex' to our home place good, likely boy as I ever see. Additional trooops for Aspinwall took their de parture from the navy yard at noon to-day, in a very quiet manner. There were uve companies ot niiy men eacn, under command of Captain Hisbee. One hundred and fifty sailors and a battery of six guns left Brooklyn navy yard to-day, with marines in command of Captin McCilla.
