THE ACTION OF LIGHT ON MILK, Direct sunlight very soon spoils milk or cream by premature souring and decomposition. The effect of in direct or reflected light lias been but little observed. It nevertheless exerts an active influence, not upon milk and cream, but upon butter and cheese while curing. The effect of light upon cream is to hasten the ac tion of tho lactic yeast, and then the formation of aleohol, and after that to hurry up putrefaction, and these changes are occasioned by the influ ence of reflected light tho same as di rect light, only in a feebler degree. Tho first effect, however, of a small quantity of reflected light a quan tity that would enable one with good eyes to read ordinary print is to heighten the color of cream dur ing an ordinary exposure of thirty six houra to forty-eight hours. As soon as the quantity of light allowed to fall upon milk is in- ceased beyond the small amount named, its influence is soon manifest ed upon the cream, causing it to be come sour and stale, lose color and flavor; and if the light is strong its surface is soon covered with mould and pimples, when the milk is stand ing in a shaded position will be all right. The conclusion is that too much light is often the cause of faulty butter, and oven butter will fade if exposed to the light, though it be in brine. A CONSISTENT MAN. The "free pass" question has very much agitated the present session of the Arkansas legislature. The other day a well-known representative arose and said: "Mr. sneaker. lavish to of fer a resolution making t a misde meanor for any member of a future session ot tho Arkansaw legislature to accept a free pass over a railroad." "Why not let it apply to the members of tho present session?" some one asked. "Oh, no, that won't do. We've all cot passes, and it would be 1m- polito to return them. Sir, this pass system is wrong. It lias a ten dency, sir, to corrupt, but it saves money. If they hadn't sont me a pass I don't know how I would have got here. Reckon I'd had to walk; but, sir, it s our duty to remove fur ther legislators from temptation. I am in favor of all good measures, and I rromisod mv people that I would work for the temperance cause. I am a temperance man from the word go." In turning suddenly his coat tails struck the corner of tho desk. Beaching back and taking the drip ping fragments of a bottle from his pocket, he remarked: "l'emperance is" tho salvation of man and the joy of woman, but I'd like devilish well to know who put that boltlo in my pocket. Smells like pretty good licker, too. Speaking about passes, why sir, tho future legislator onght to have every possible inducement to behave himself." ArJcaiisaw Trav eler. The Mormon Conference. LoaAN', Utah, April G. The general annual conference of the Mormon church closed this afternoon. There was a large attendance yesterday and to-day. The proceedings were not marked with anything of special im portance to-day, discourses being chiefly exhortations. The epistle from the presidency of the church, read yesterdav, gives Mormons gen eral satisfaction. This is thb flr3t general conference in the history of the church where the presidency of the church was absent. AVI tic Aivaltc Druggists. Messrs. W. .
