THE Hamiltorian Trotting Stallion, PATR I CI AN, WILL MAKE THE ENSUING SEASON from the lit or April until .the luf r July at the farm of the undersigned on Clatsop I'lalBs, on the following terms: Slagie Service. 9lSt Tbr Season, $20: Invuraare, SS3. PATRICIAN is a dark bay with black points, 15J4 hands high ; Is of a gentle, trac table disposition, ai u is a pure-gaitcd trot ter. He was bred by Wm. Corbett. at Oak Grove Breeding Farm, Sau Mateo. Cal. The pedigree furnished by Jlr. Corbett at time of purchase has been mislaid, but from the American Stud Book, and other reliable sources, I have the follow lug : Patrician was sired by Oak Grove, son of Arthnrton by Rysdykrs Uamiltonlan ; dam. Belle Alta ; grauu-dam by Bellmont. a thor oughbred -California's great sire of racers and trotter-. Among tne latter, from llell tnout dams are Nellie Patcheu, 2 H5H. aud Peluse Sheppard. 2 3. Oak Grove wasj an untrained hoise, and went to Australia berore having but little opportunity of establishing a record. His dam is a full sister to Yenture, who has a record of 2 H- Arthurton. although nev er prepared for racing, has shown a mile in 2 &. At four years old ho was bred to fine mares, and of tho produce are Arab, 2:20K, and Joe Arthurton, 2:25V. Arthurtou's first dam, Imogeno bv heely's American Starr: second dam by Abdalla,; third dam by Imp. Bell founder; fourth dam by Royalist, son of Commander, by Imp. Messenger ; fifth dam by Hardware, by imp. Mfissenger. Ryjdyk's Ilamiltonian by Mambrino, son of imp. Messenger: Uamiltonlan besides being the Are or Dexter, 2 :17J. Nettle, 2 :18W, Orange Girl. 2 20 afod Jay Gould. 2 Hi. has to lils credit three others that have trotted In 2 ;30. and better. He was also tho grand-slro of Maud S., 2 :9'i Jay Eye See, 2:10, and St. Julian. Hamlltonlan's first dam was the Chas. Kent mare by imp. Bell founder ; second dam, One Eye by Bishop's Uamiltonlan, son of Messenger. Thus It will bo seen that Patrician has two direct crosses of Bellfounder and rour of Messen ger, the two great fountain heads of trotting blood in America. He has had but little handling, but In the opinion of an experi enced trainer, has hown a remarkable de gree of speed, and staying qualities, and with proper training througn tho season would be able to make a mile In 2 :10. Mares from a distance will be received at Sklpauou aud will bo pastured at a reason able rate All care will Tje taken to prevent acci dents, but I will be responsible fofnone. JOSrAH WEST. Van Camp, lately United State3 j consul to tne jj jji lsianas, wno is now in San Francisco, pronounces the re port of Germany having annexed the Samoan isles to be untrue. Tho Ham burg firm of Grodeffroy some thirty! jeura binco purcuaseu Janus irom ine : , i , r it. I bamoan government which the -present king, Maliotoa, attempted lately to reassume possession of, whereupon a detail of sailors from a German man-of-war went ashore and raised the German flag over tho disputed territory, whioh circumstances gave rise to the annexation report. Mr. Van Camp considers the islands worthless, there being not ove.r 2,000 acres of arable lands in the whole group. The chiefs own it all Six years since King Carkabow, a cele brated cannibal, introduced measles into the Fiji group, from which 50,000 people have since died. There is now a native population of 125,000 and about 2,000 whites. Very little tea or coffee is raised. The only river of any importance is the Eeiva, which is navigable for 180 miles. The English and German residents of the islands are continually quarreling about land. Mr. Van Camp has with him some ghastly curiosities in the shape of the bones and skull of a missionary, who, a number of years since, was mur dered and eaten by the cannibals. To some ot extreme susceptibility the fact that one sleeps with the bed pointing east and west is ominous. It is said by scientific men to be little less than suicidal for certain parties thus to locate their couches. Tho proper position of the bed, they say, is north and south, in harmony with tho magnetic currents. It is easy to poo-hoo at these suggestions. Some persons can ride baokward in a carriage with perfeot ease; ascend or descend in an elevator; can cross and jecross tho stormy ocean with no vertigo or nausea, while others must face with the carriage or railway train, orthey Buffer great discomfort It is plain that we are not all alike, and that we must regard tho elec trical conditions of each one. 'I Don't Feel Like Work." It makes no difference what business you are engage! in : whether you are a preacher, a merchant, a mechanic, a lawyer or or a common laborer, you can't do your work woll while you arc half sick. Thousands try to, but all in vain. How much better to keep your organs in good order by taking Parker's Tonic when you feel "a little out of sorts." It would bo money in your pocket. One hour of good, rejoicing health Is worth half a dozen hours full of languor and pain. A Work of Art. One of the neatest and most elaborately finished Writing Desks ever seen on this coast can be seen on exhibition In the win dow of the cigar store, nt to Foster's Ex change, on Water street in this city. The desk was made by Mr. C. Constantlne of this city and certainly reflects great credit on the skill, taste and workmanship of the manufacturer. Ihe desk is about fifty-two inches high by two feet in width and Is made out of various woods such as oak, ash, but ternut, walnut aud white holly ; they were fir?t saw ed out in pieces and so cut In beauti ful designs as to resemble fine bracket work. The top or cover of the cesk is inlaid with cardinal and blue velvet. At the back on either side of a square recess are two hand somely carved apartments with folding doors. In the desk part arc a number or pigeon holes for papers, envelopes, etc, this is surmounted uitnbeautitul bracket work, and on the top of each side Is a white door, handsomely carved ; underneath Ls a semi circle, also carved In rich designs, inlaid with gilt work. The sides are Inlaid with enm-on velvet, the bracket work being laid over It in different kinds of rich woods, the whole being surmounted with gold mould ings. A brief description or this wonderful Invention conveys no Idea of its elegance and finish, one must see It to appreciate It. The desk will be rallied off and persons de sirous of procuring a handsome and useful ornament for tho home office should not lose the opportunity to take a chance. Mr. Constantlne can be found at the store any time to show those desirous of seeing the desk. The raffle will take place at 3 o'clock April 11th. YOUNG 3IE.VI-BEAD THIS.
