Tho news that Cap!. Scott's swift steamer, the Telhone, would make a through run from Portland without stop ping, attracted a large crowd to the docks yesterday morning. She blew her whistle at sixteen minutes past eleven. A passenger says: "We left Ash street dock at five minutes past six. To St. Johns she did well, but at that point the steam ran down to 10.1 pounds, and she was cut off with half stroke; the remain der of the way she was on three-quarter stroke. The low water interfered con siderably witn ner speed. .Now and then, wuen in suoai water, wo could feel ner just settle down, and slow np as though a brake had been put on, as the wheel sucked, and it is my belief that if the river was eight or ten feet higher she would have improved her time at least half an hour. The running down of the steam at G:33, alone, detained her four teen minutes." "One of her best runs was from Oak Point, which she passed at 9:20, to Cath lamet, which was reached at9:57. At Cathlamet we met a strong head wind which made white caps on the water, but the tide was in her favor nearly all the way ciown. The distance run by the Telephone on yesterday's down trip was 105 miles; time five hours and eleven minutes. Captain Scott is reported to have said, ho would bet his boat against $10,000 that with plenty of water he would leave Portland at G o'clock and blow his whis tle in front of Astoria at 10. The Telephone was heartilv cheered 011 her arrival. She brought a number of excursionists, and at two o'clock started with a big crowd aboard. As she swung out, the engineer "opened her out," and she shot up toward Tonjiue point on a flood tide with the wind at her back, at such a gait as kept up would land her at Portland at 7:30. A dispatch received last evening says she mtde the run in five hours and forty-two minutes. She will be down this "afternoon, and will start for Portland at six o'clock to-mor row morning. Nothing was found on Wilson's parson to identify him other than the initials "R. P. W. tattooed on his richt arm. and a crucifix on the left just above the elbow. The coroner's jury found that the deceased came to his death on or about January 20, 1885, by accidental drowning. Wilion was an Englishman by birth, and has a wife liv ing in Liverpool. News, 4. The Standard company, under tho lead ership of the plain comedian, Charley Reed, are making direct advances into the affections of the public Call. Charley Reed's ministrels require no "booming;" their work speaks for itself, and that it is appreciated is evidenced by the large and enthusiastic audience pres ent every evening. Argus. Charley Reed, as a funny fellow, bears but little resemblance to the average minstrel bud-man. The humor of Bones or Tambourine is of a stereotyped kind, and we laugh nt it more out of habit than anything else. Not so with Charley Reed's comicalities. He discards tho usual budget and seeks to amuse by orig inar methods. His jokes are of timely point andpf current meaning, His man ner is quaint and simple, and. as laugh able in itself as tho nonsense he utters. He is genuinely funny. "The Private Sack-I-Carry" is decidedly uproarious in its fun. Neics-Letler. Preparations are being xnauo t hold en tertainments, probably a basket picnic and a dramatic entertainment within a short time, for the purpose of raising funds enough to ensure a large number of our firemen going to the tournament. It is now proposed to take two hose teams and a hook and ladder team, thus enabling the firemen to enter nearly every contest. There can be no argument as to the qualities essential to a perfect remedy for the ills arising from a disordered or inactive condition of the Liver, Stomach and Bowels. Everyone will admit that it should be perfectly safe for old and young of both sexes, at any and. all times: that It should be acceptable both to the taste and the stomach; that it should never fail to act promptly and thoroughly, yet painlessly, and It should give strength to those organs. It is now well known that Syrup of Figs possess es those qualities in a pre-eminent degree. W.E. Dement & Co. are agents for Astoria. Oregon. Dement All over the world, at Easter-tide, eggs are used for games, or given in token of good-will. In our own country, as tho time draws near, the boys lay in a stock of eggs, which they boil very hard-jn a J decoction of logwood chips, herbs, or colored rags. When these preparations aro finished tho fun begins. One Joy holds an egg so that the top of it is seen just above his closed fist. Another Imjv, with his egg held in the same way, pounds with the bottom of it. on the top of egg number one. The egg that is broken first becomes the property of tho boy who holds the hardest of the two. Another egg game that is a greater fa vorite because it can be played out of doors, is the rolling of these hard-boiled eggs one after another down a hill; and every boy who can break another's prop erty, may have it for his lunch. In Rus sia it is a common custom to dye and run ejTjrs, me latter part or the practice belonging to tho children. All classes of the people exchange these prettv little symbols, embracing each other, and ex claiming while they do so, "Christ is risenP' tho respOnso being always, "he w risen indeed!" In some parts of Scot land the children have tho greater simr.- in the amusement of rolling the dyed eggs in tho fields and greens Tho object of this rolling is to keep the eggs un cracked as long as possible. There are plenty of other eggs in fine confection ery; and sugar, wax nnd glass aro also used as materials for Easter-eggs. In Italy tho eggs are gilt or colored before being placed on the table in large orna mental dishes, prettily festooned with flowers. Tho table remains arranged in this way, and every visitor is invited to take one of these eccs. which he will not refuse, unless ho wishes to give offense to his host and hostess. The merry makers of Naples present each otherwith stained eggs, arranged in baskets or on trays; the well-to-do classes taking caro that such eggs come from tho confec tioner or the toy-shop. Jn Germany, though tho egg-giving custom is verv popular, they havo in many parts of tho country Easter hares, hens, and lambs little sugar things lying on green banks, and manj of the people make little nests of moss in out-of-the-way places, and the eager children aro sent to seek "the eggs tho hare has laid;" such eggs being generally of sugar, or toy eggs that open, in which littlo presents are hid. The older people regard the Easter egg as a symbol, tho embryo life contained in the egg being emblematical of Christ's rest Jn the tomb and his glorious resur- rociion. j.ue cuuoren nave tueir version of tho custom, too, and say that as the blessed Jesus slept in tho sepulchre, a littlo bird came and sang near the sacred spot; and as a reward for its tenderness, its eggs were always afterward tinted like the colors of the rainbow. Among tho Germans and Russians and Irish this custom is especially prevalent; and beside the playful contests already mentioned, the eges are concealed in hedges and hay-stacks, and all manner of nooks end crannies, that tho excitement and frolic of looking for them may pre cede the pleasure of finding them. Easter eggs aro sometimes mado of glass, of porcelain, of china, of silver or gold, and of all sizes from little to great, and can be made to contain very valuablo presents. Many a lover who was too shy to offer a ring to his pretty neighbor has had courage to connde it to the safe keeping of an Easter egg. ttucklcu's Arnicu Salvo.
