CD She gjaUjj storim. ASTORIA, OREGON: AriUL 4.18S5J SA1TKDAY Those who wonder how sliip canals, costius millions upon millions of dol lars, can be mado to pay will be in terested to know that the average charge for the passage of a ship through the Suez canal is auoui, SC,000. The new paper bottles are said to withstand the action of water, wine and alcohol. It is thought that druggists will be able to furnish them free of charge, just as they provide wrapping paper for dry drugs. The cementing material of the bottles is a mixture of blood, albumen, alum and lime. "When the first steamer that crossed the ocean, the Savannali, approached Livorpool emitting a dense volume of black smoke from her chimneys, they rang the firobells and dispatched a number of vessels armed with fire extinguishing apparatus, to "the as sistance of the snpposed burning ship. Lxtteb-kats, when several stamps are placed closely together upon let ters containing money, after taking off the stamps, cut a slit into the en velope, through which they abstract the bills, and cover the cut up again putting on the stamps. The French postal department, bringing this practice to the notice of the public, recommends, therefore, that when more stamps than one are used, they be placed about one-eighth of an inch apart. PirysroiAKs of prominence in sev eral largo cities have been recently "interviewed" for their opinion on roller skating and its effect upon the health of those who indulge in it There has seldom been a question upon which doctors disagree so cor dially, some maintaining that the pas time, is a healthy one, while others contended that it is almost suicidal. Many-of the doctors conservatively stated that roller skating, like danc ing and similar forms of physical ex orcise, is not injurious if indulged in moderately and sensibly. Rusrin' says: It is a no less fatal error to despise labor, when regulated by intellect, than to value it for its own sake. We are always in these days trying to separato the two; we want one man to be always thinking and another to be always -working, and we call one a gentleman and the other an operative; whereas the work man ought often to be thinking and the thinker often to be working, and both should be gentlemen in the best sense. As it is, we make both ungen tle, the one envying,, the other despis ing his brother, and the mass of so ciety is made up of morbid thinkers and miserable workers. Now, it is only by labor that thought can be mado happy; and the professions should be liboral, and there should be less pride felt in peculiarity of em ployment and more in excellence of achievement Ojce reason why tho food supplies of the British metropolis are obtained so largely from Uie continent or from this country is that, local freights in Great Britain are high. At a meeting of the east Kent chamber of agricul ture statements were made which evoked bitter comments upon the pol icy of English railways. A ton of cheese was transported from tho United States to Loudon for 25 shil lings, while a lou of cheese from Ches ter to London cost 42 shillings 6 pence. Potatoes from France were transported to London for 30 shillings per ton, while from Penzance the charge was 40 shillings. Hops were transported from Flushing, Holland, for 20 shillings, but from Feversham the charge was 33 shillings. Com paring these British charges with those of which many people complain so bitterly in lhi3 country, it will be seen that after all American railroads servo the public at very- reasonable rates. Tnu Central American slates, to which attention is now specially di rected, are five in number Guate mala, Honduras, San Salvador, Nica ragua and Costa Bica. Altogether they have something over 2,000,000 of population, of which Guatemala and Honduras, which are supposed to be acting in concert to sustain Barrios, have more than half. Costa Bica is the mobt southerly, bordering on Co lombia, and Nicaragua comes next above it Both these states extend from the Atlantic to the Pacific wa ters. Honduras comes next, and bor dors largely on the Caribbean sea, touching the Pacific side only at a point Guatemala is the most north erly state, bordering Mexico, and has n large coast line on the Pacific, touching the Gulf of Honduras at a point only on the Atlantic side. San Salvador is the smallest, but most thickly populated of the five states, andlies wholly on the Pacific DIED.
