April 3, 1885, for the improve ment of the crossings of Jefferson and Lafayette streets and Jefferson and Washington streets as provided by or dinance No. G5G. Said improvement shall consist of grading to the full width to the proper grade, and by planking to a width of twenty feet in the center thereof with new and sound fir plank three inches In thickness. Bids must state the price for each crossing and must be accom panied with a bond in the sum of five hundred dollars, to the effect, that if the contract be awarded to such bidder that he will within forty-eight hours after notice of such award, enter into con tract therefor with good and sufficient surety for the faithful performance of the work. Three companies of rifles and por tions of a field battery went from Quappelle station to Fort Qnappelle. Ho advices have been received from f there. The Free 1'ress has received the ' following from Battleferd: We are' in imminent dangers from the Indians in the vicinity. Chief Poundmaker has gone into open rebellion, and pnt the instructor and agent at defiance. Indians have left other reserves, and are concentrating in large numbers about Battleford. It is estimated' that there are at least 500 Indians, and more are coming there in a short j time. Several of them have come into town, threatening to burn it and j lake possession of the barracks and stores. The Indians wills not remain long inactive, and may descend on the town at any moment, and seize all stores to provide them selves with provisions. There will likely be a general powwow of In dians to-morrow, when they will mako demands. It is known that the whites will protect their lives and property to the last, but owing to superior numbers o Indians the po sition is most critical. Nearly all the police have been withdrawn to Prince Albert, and the supply of arms is lim ited here. "Wo hope for the best." No word has been received at "Win nipeg from Eiel's vicinity, or from Prince Albert. Operations cannot be undertaken by troops until a force arrives from the east. If young ladies would remember this and their influence for good and evil in this world, wo would meet with fewer young men who aspire only to spend money and look sweet, and more young men could bo found capable of meeting emergencies. 1 have always believed nothing more noble, aside from honor and upright eouness in a I young man, than the girl who has sense enough to appreciate these qualities. A Woric of Art. One of the neatest and most elaborately coast can be seen on exhibition In the win dow of the cigar store, nt-xt to Foster's Ex change, on Water street In this city. The desk was made by Mr. C. Constantino of tuis city anu certainly reilects great credit on the sklU, taste and workmanship of the manufacturer. The desk Is about fifty-two Inches high by two feet in vtldth and Is made out of various woods such as oak, ash, but ternut, walnut and white holly ; they were flrt saw ed out in pieces and so cut In beauti ful designs as to resemble tine bracket work. The top or cover of the nesk is inlaid with cardinal and blue vehct. At the back on either sjde of a square recess are two hand somely carved apartment with folding doors. In the desk part are a number of pigeon holes for papers, envelopes, etc., this Is surmounted with beautiful bracket work, and on the top of each side Is a white door, handsomely carved ; underneath Is a semi circle, also caned In rich designs, inlaid with gilt work. The sides are inlaid with crimson velvet, the bracket work being laid over it in different kinds of rich woods, tho whole being surmounted with gold mould ings. A brief description of this wonderful Invention conveys no Idea of Its elegance and finish, one must see It to appreciate It. The desk will be raffled off and persons de sirous of procuring a handsome and useful ornament for the home ofllce should not lose the opportunity to tako a chance.
