will be received at the office of the un
dersigned, auditor and clerk of the city
of Astoria, until one. o'clock p. m. on
Friday. April 3, 1885, for the improve
ment of the crossings of Jefferson aud
Lafayette streets and Jefferson and
Washington streets as provided by or
dinance Xo. 65G.
Said improvement shall consist of
grading to the full width to the proper
grade, and by planking to a width of
twenty feet in the center thereof with
new and sound fir plank three inches
in thickness. Bids must state the price
for each crossing and must be accom-
Eanied with a bond in the sum of five
undred dollars, to the effect, that if the
contract be awarded to such bidder that
he will within forty-eight hours after
notice of such award, enter into con
tract therefor with good and sufficient
surety for tho faithful performance
of the work. The right to reject anv

between Kinney's and Elmore's canneries.
Ship Southern CJi ief, of New York,
of 1200 tons register, lost two years
ago in Eoyal Koads, was purchased
by J. Eoss, of San Pranoisco, "who
succeeded in getting her off the bsach
and sold her to F. Bernard, of San
Francisco. He had her taken to
Port Blakely, given a thorough ovar
hauliug, putting in a new keel,
caulked and coppered her, put in
spars and sails, making her about as
good a3 new. She is intended for the
coasting trade as she is well adapted
for it and will carry 1,250,000 feet of
lumber or 2400 tons of coal.
The American Ciilticator tells of
a dairyman who undertook to churn
his cream sweet instead of. allowing
it to ripen before churning, the result
was that the choice, aromatic, nutty
flavored product which had previous
ly distinguished his dairy, was re
placed with butter "devoid of flavor
or fragrance, having a dead, neutral
taste, and tho week s product sold
at 35 cents per pound, instead of for
70 cents, tho usual price for previous
consignments.
It is reported that the cargo of

A Work of Art.
Ono of the neatest and most elaborately
finished Writing Desks ever seen on this
coast can be seen on exhibition in the win
dow of the cigar store, n xt to Foster's Ex
change, on Water street In this city. The
desk was made by Mr. C. Constantino of
this city and. certain.y reflects great credit
n the skill, taste and workmanship of the
manufacturer, l he desk Is about fifty-two
Inches high by two feet In width and is made
out of various woods such as oak, ash, but
ternut, walnut and white holly; they were
ur-i saw eu out in pieces ana so cut in oeautl
f ul designs as to resemble fine bracket w ork
The top or cover of the ek is inlaid with
cardinal nnd blue velvet. At tho back on
cither side of a square recess are two hand
somely carved apartments with folding
doors. In the desk part are a number ol
pigeon holes for papers, envelopes, etc, this
is surmounted withbeautitul bracket work,
and on the top of each side is a white door,
handsomely carved ; underneath Is a semi
circle, also carved In rich designs. Inlaid
with gilt work. The sides are inlaid with
crimon velvet, the bracket work being laid
over it tn different kinds of rich woods, tho
whole being surmounted with gold mould
ings. A brief description of this wonderful
invention conveys no idea of Its elegance
and finish, one must see it to appreciate 1L
