C2 t gnity sforau. ASTORIA, OREGON: TUESDAY MARCH 31. 1885 Jas. Jett Las "laid an eg" on the deak of the editor of the "Walla "Walla Statesman. According to an English paper 100 tons of iron were recently trans ported to America for one shilling. After May 22 Oregon clergymen can no longer travel on half fare tickets on the O. E. & N. Co.'s lines. Cam Sommz says that "President Cleveland has morohrains to-day than Mr. Blaine." He has some offices at his disposal, one of -which Carl -would mightily like to fill. The British government has char tered the new Cnnard steamer Etru ria, and the steamers Oregon and Alaska for service as armed cruiser transports. They will be fitted with ten guns each. The editor of the Walla Walla Union has reached the conclusion that "when one sets up in business as a public benefactor he gathers more curses than smiles, makes more ene mies than friends." Chinese merchants in Victoria are so exasperated at the enforcement of the restriction bill that it is reported that they are about to offer their stocks and buildings to the govern ment and leave the country. The Seattle Chronicle says that coast freights are lower now than at any time in the history of the Pacific coast There has been no drop in freights this way of late. Astoria pays SI a ton from San Francisco. The Oregonian thinks that the Bug- gestion that Governor Moody appoint John H. Mitchell United States sena tor, is a good one. It is further of the opinion that such appointment would "greatly simplify things at the next election." It might, among those who are Bepublicans "for revenue only." Postmastee-Gexeraii Vilas has called into his service as attorney- general for the postoffice department a law partner of his, Edward Bryant of Wisconsin. Bryant is a Republi can, and Democrats are asking why this is thus. Some of them go so far as to say that they might just as well have helpod elect Blaine. There is considerable rough com ment in Marion county over the re cent hanging of Jos. Drake. It is claimed that he was innocent and the judge, the jury, the governor and the supreme court are all blamed. The ohief cause of all the post mortem appeals for mercy is the faot that Drake with the rope around his neck on the gallows, stoutly maintained his innocence. A Moktbeaii special reports that the Canadian Pacific has sent an ulti matum to the government at Ottawa to the effect that if aid is not given farther construction of the road will be suspended. Seven million dollars of the company's paper is maturing between now and next June, and the oompany has no money to meet it. La Minerve, the government paper, says that if the government does not come to the company's aid the result will be little short of a national dis aster. Oxe of the employes of the White House was asked how he liked the new president "Well, he has been a great help to us. When the crowds get so thick in the east room that we can't do anything with them the president comes down and shakes hands for an hour or so and thins them out He said if he could help us in this way ho would, and that he didn't mind shaking out 500 now and then," was the answer of his appre ciative doorkeeper. - m m The St. Petersburg correspondent of the London Times says: BusBia's reply was ready the 26th inst, but both governments desire to keep tho contents secret England proposed another frontier line. It is not known whether Bussia accepts, but offieial circles rely upon a peaceful compromise. Great irritation is caused by "the preparations of the Indians, which it is stated far exceed Bussia's preparations. In every thing calm indifference is exhibited by the Bussians, except in small mil itary circles indirectly interested in the Afghan question. Oxe of the directors of.the Hudson Bay Company depicts late hardships in Hudson bay. He states that the bark Prince of Wales arrived at Moose Factory on the 27th of Sep tember with $250,000 worth of furs. and left on the 3rd of October for England. On arriving at the mouth of the straits she landed in an impen etrable barrier of ice and became unmanageable. Captain Bishop turned the vessel around from the hazard ous position, and after three -weeks reached Charlton island on James bay, -where the hark -was surrounded with ice. After much privation, sev eral men in a small boat reached Moose Factory and reported the perilous position of the Prince of Wales. The crew had to leave the bark, and are now -wintering in huts on Hudson bay. It is feared that the vessel will become a wreck. It will be August before a relief party can reach the vessel.
