A dispatch' from Paris says it is officially an- nounced that-Chinese troops on the , Tonquin frontier yesterday made a, desperate attack upon the en trenched J camp established by General ! jNegrier, between Langson and ii-ilna, and from which Ueneral Negrier has been making reconnois- ances beyond the frontier separating Tonquin from China proper. The Chinese drove the French back be yond Langson, and recaptured that town. Ueneral regner was griev ously wounded, and tho French cas ualties were very serious. Latest accounts represent the French troops in full retreat with the Chinese vigorously pursuing them. Vast quantities of commissary and other stores were lost. General Ne grier received a gun-shot wound in the chest He was brought from the field, but his recovery is doubtful. The total French los3, killed and wounded, are not yet known. General Brier de Lisle, who is in chief command in Tonquin, tele graphs for assistance in an imploring tone, which leads Parisians to expect further disasters. A council of war was held to-day, with General Lewal, minister of war, presiding. Intense excitement prevails wherever the bad news has become known in France. Should Thank Reecher. Washington, March 29. Various stories are related as to tho manner in which the new minister to England was discovered by President Cleve land. An eastern member of congress attributes Phelps' selection to Henry WardBeecher. "Tho fact is," said this congressman, "President Cleve land never met Phelps but once, and knew so little about him that he would never thought of selecting him for the office if some powerful influ ence bad not suggested it Henry Ward Beecher has been a warm per sonal friend of Phelps for several years, and Ueecher came to Wasuinjr- ton about ten days before Phelps was nominated, and had a long talk with the president I am told he enme here expressly to ask that Phelps be named as minister to England. The president feels that he is under deep obligations to Beecher, so much so that anything thatBeecher might ask would be granted. There is no donbt that Phelps got his place at the re quest of the. Plymouth church pas tor." Walla Walla, March 2S. The re adjustment of the limits of tho North ern Paciflo land graut by secretary Lamar, so as to run directly east from Wallula Junction instead of north easterly, as formerly, gives great sat isfaction here, as it will enable a large number of settlers who have made valuable improvements upon railroad lands to obtain title thereto. There was great uneasiness in the community in regard to the class of lands affected, and a failure to make the change would have involved a number of citizens in heavy losses, and meant absolute ruin to others. A gentleman just returned from British Columbia says the Indians who live near the cranberry marshes on the main land pidk the ripe cran berries from the moss that grows un der the vines now and sell them for 25 cents a quart They aie cherry red and very delicious sauce when cooked. It is said the Indians only pick them after the snow melts in early spring. Willamette Farmer. This is an old expression, used to convey the idea of a big dinner; so big as to make the table creak and threaten to tumble to the floor. Some times it happens that people eat too much of the big dinner and have to groan over the attacks of indigestion, the precursors of regular dyspepsia. Brown's Iron Bitters, the great enemy of dyspepsia, relievs all this trouble and makes comfort take the place of groaning. Mrs. Matilda Davidson, Montgomery City., Mo., says, "I took Brown's Iron Bitters for dyspepsia, and it did me great good." Man seems planned for an outdoor, life in a inild climate, with just a leaf or two of shelter for a rainy day. His nature will bend for a time "to the conventional burdens of an artiGcial civilization, but replant him on first principles m tho outdoor garden of life and lm recuperative forcer, will rebound with the elastic energy of stee 1 springs relieved. Our ftsbio.iable friends would lose cast were they to use their neighbor's second-hand clothing, but they will daily try to purify their own blood with "their neighbor's second-hand or ten times used breath, poisoned as it always is, even when exhaled by young" and healthy persons. Well, Mr. Ex change, Prairie Farmer wants to know why yon didn t make a better stop' while you were about it; you "might as well die for n sheep as a lamb." Why, a man in Kansas wish ing to start a new town at a railway crossing, followed the directions of this journal, and planted Hubbard squash seeds where he wanted houses. When ripe he cleaned out tho insides, put in doors and windows, chambers, floors and chimneys, with cellars in the bottom, rented them to families for dwellings, and sold the lots for enough to invest $500,000 in govern ment bonds, and with the snrplus chnnge has gone to Europe with his family.
