The first term of court in the dis

The Texas senate was a lively
place on Saturday week. Members
called each other "curs," "liars,"
"cowards" and "drunken fools."
Then they drew knives and pistols.
Then the presiding officer thought it
time to interfere, and order was re
stored. It takes $3S0,00Q per annum to pay
the salaries of United States senators,
and over $2,000,000 for salaries of
representatives, exclusive of mileage
for both, amounting to $150,000, and
salaries for clerks, messengers and
others connected with the national
legislation, $617,000 more.
The Liverpool Post thinks that the
quiet return of Mr. Arthur to his law
office, after being president over 57,
000,000 of people, is "better than Cin
cinnatus and his plow, and with noth
ing like the fuss." The Post adds
that this "would have been possible
only in the United States."
The climax of the quarrel between
Mr. Hendricks and Mr. McDonald is
to bo reached, so the story runs, when
the fight starts to elects a successor
to Benjamin Harrison to the United
States senate. Then McDonald will
be pressed by his faction, backed by
Dan Yoorhees, while the Hendricks
crowd will push Governor Gray.
Timber rafts on the Rhine are a
noticeable characteristic of that his
toric river. A single raft has often
eight or ten small houses on it, and
from 400 to 500 workmen, rowers and
pilots. The vast pile is steered by
means of immense nars, and is so con
structed as to twist like a huge snake
in the narrow channels. The sale of
the raft at the end of the voyage often
realizes about $150,000.
The present British government
has performed one signal aot of jus
tice. In a new treaty with China the
Chinese government is given full con
trol over their taxation of opium. In
all British history there is no more
unjustifiable act than the forcible in
terference with the internal tariff of
the Chinese empire for the purpose of
forcing upon them a destroying drug.
The Chinese government will now
probably proceed to do what it has
long desired to do, abolish the opium
trade altogether, in order to protect
its subjects from the baneful influ
ence of the drug.
BussiA has more soldiers and more
ships of war than any other country
in the world. In her standing army
there are 780,000 men, and she has
353 ships in her navy. It costs $125,
000,000 a year to keep her .military
establishments on their peace footing,
and her military authorities say they
can place 2,300,000 trained men un
der arms in war time. The English
standing army is 182,000 men. THis
includes th6 English regular troops
serving in India. The English war
office authorities profess to be able to
put 6i2f00QTwell-'drilled and effective
British troops in the field if called on
to do so. This does not include the
Indian auxiliary forces, which would
swell the total British forces at home
and abroad to over 1,000,000 men. It
costs England $90,000,000 a year to
keep up its regular army. In 1853
there were 52,000 Irish soldiers in
the English army; now there are
The news from London points to
war. The queen has ordered out
53,000 reserves and 140,000 militia.
Every armory in England is called on
for munitions of war. Eifle factories
are at work night and day, and heavy
appropriations are asked from Par
liament. The London newspapers
talk fight. The Times of the 27th
says that there is no backing eut:
the Standard says: "We appear to
be on the verge of what is likely to
draw into its vortex the whole civil
ized world." The prospect of a big
Russian war with Turkey as an En
glish ally overshadows the operations
in the Soudan.
The Mormons of Utah have made
an appalling discovery. They have
found out that the law against poly
gamy can be enforced, and they have
every reason to believe that conviction
will follow conviction until the last
possessor of a plurality of wives shall
have been sent to prison. Utah's re
generation is indeed near at hand.
The gentiles are increasing in num
bers, in strength and in daring. They
no longer fear the secret tribunal of
the saints, and the time has come to
them when juries can be obtained who
will fearlessly apply the law to tbo
evidence. The head of the church is
alarmed and the elders are quaking
in their boots at the threatening con
dition of temporal affairs. The hope
that President Cleveland would aid
them, either directly or indirectly,
has vanished, and now there has come
to their minds the conviction that in
the moral elemement of the American
community they have no friends. The
Mormons must go. Let them emi
grate to Mexico, to the Sandwich is
lands, to Australia, if they will but
bid the United States an eternal fare
well. NEW TO-DAY.
