ASTORIA, OREGON:
THURSDAY.
..... MARCH 2G, 1885
THE
CALIFORNIA
FISHERY.
WHALE
Few people are aware of the extent
of the whale fishery on this coast.
There are many little coves along the
coast of California where the hardy
and daring whale catchers live in an
unobtrusive manner, with no particu
lar expense except cheap, strong
clothing and plain and wholesome
food. They have no operas to attend,
few or no taxes to pay, no fences to
build, or streets to grade, or lands to
plow. Their home is on the sea, with
brief Btays on the shore, where their
duties consist in changing blubber to
oil, which they put in barrels until
they obtain enough for a shipment,
when they lash the barrels together
in the form of a raft, signal an empty
lumber schooner, and float the raft of
barrels of oil to the schooner, where
they are hoisted on board and taken
to ban irancisco, where they are
turned into gold.
Already during the present season
nine whiles have been caught off the
Los Angeles cqast and taken into
Portuguese bend, a quiet cove about
eight miles west of San Pedro, where
about thirty men are constantly em
ployed in harpooning these monster
beasts of the ocean, or in towing them
ashore, cutting up the carcass, render
ing the blubber into oil, and putting
the same into barrels, extracting the
whalebone, and sending the refuse of
the animal out to sea to avoid pesti
lence on land.
Probably not a thousand persons
in that state have any idea of the
magnitude of the business of whale
fishing on the California coast, so
quietly is it carried on, with no pub
lic announcement and no quarrel
with the railroad company about the
price of freight The company at
Portuguese Bend have six large
whale boats, besides yawls and the
usual rowboats needed on 'such occa
sions. One of the nine whales re
cently taken out of a school of whales
passing by Portuguese Bend going
south was what is called a "cow
whale," and yielded ninety barrels of
oil. The whales going south yielded
abont four hundred and fifty barrels
of oil, and the same school in their
northern trip may yield as much
more.
At San Diego six whales have been
takjn that yielded 300 barrels of oil,
and the whalers expect to capture a
large number from the school or
troop of whales now moving north.
There are about eight other stations
on the coast of California where
these quiet hunters of the sea are
engaged in their arduous but profit
able duties. All the stations appear
to be doing well this year, but the
stations south of Point Conception
appear to have smoother water and
better fortune - than those farther
north.
It is thought Secretary Lamar "will
make several important recommenda
tions to the next congress. Among
others, one will favor the transfer of
the pension bureau to the rar de
partment It is also possible, with
legislation, that the affairs of the
Indian bureau can be "wound up
within the next five ears, as was the
freedmen's bureau. General Miles,
of the army, believes this can be
done. The president sent for Gener
al Miles just before ho left Washing
ton for Vancouver and had a long
talk with him npon the subject
General Miles said he would take a
contract to make every Indian in his
department of the extreme northwest
self-sustaining within the next five
years, if he had certain legislation to
help him from congress. This would
simplify very much the work of the
interior department, and make it pos
sible for a good, honest, business
man to clean out and properly regu
late the department, which has been
for years the center of more scandals
than any other branch of the ser
vice. The New York Star says: Mr.
Blaine feels friendly toward Mr.
Cleveland, and thinks it will bo the
duty of Bepublicans in congress to
give him every possible backing in
carrying out the policy he has laid
down. A large majority of the Be
publicans agree with Mr. Blaine in
this. They expect to see many Dem
ocrats repudiate Cleveland, if he
lives up to his promises. They ex
pect to see a large faction of the
Democrats opposing him in congress
next winter, and they have deter
mined that they will stand by him. .
The Ames company at Ohicopee re
ceived an order last Tuesday for 200,
000 swords.

Mabisoaii, the Mexican minister of
foreign affairs, announced on the
24th that he had jnst received news
that Barrios had invaded San Salva
dor with 15,000 men; he added: "If
the moral disapproval of Mexico and
the United States has no effect upon
President Barrios, more decided ac
tion may be necessary. "While do
voting all our energies to internation
al construction, we would deplore
the necessity of a foreign war."
The prize of 40,000 francs offered
by-the French academy for some cer
tain test of death, to prevent people
from being buried alive, was given
to a physian who announced that on
holding the supposed dead person to
a strong light, if living a scarlet tinge
is see where the fingers touch, show
ing a continuous circulation of the
blood, no scarlet being seen if dead.
