ASK FOR Probably the moat wonderful time piece everbeard of. is a clock describ ed by a Hindoo rajah asbelonging to a native princess of upper India. In front oE the clock's disk was a gong swung upon pole3. and near it was a pile of artificial limbs. The pile was made up of tho full number of parts of twelve perfect bodies, but all lay heaped together in seeming confusion. "Whenever tho hands of the clock indicate tho hour of 1, out from tho pile crawled just the number of parts to form tho frame of one man, part joining itself to part with quick metallic click; and, when completed, the figure sprang up, siezed a small mallet, and, walking up to the gong, struck one, the first hour. When two o'clock came, two men rose and did likewise: and so through all the hours of ethe day, the number of figures be- j ing the same as the number hours, til" at noon and midnight the entire heap sprang up and, marching to the contr. struck one after another, each his blow, making twelve in all, and then fell to pieces again. Their Age at Inauguration. "When he was inaugurated Grover Cleveland lacked fonrteen days of be ing 48 years old. Only one younger man has been inaugurated president and that was General Grant, who lacked some six weeks of being 47 years old when ho entered, the white house. Franklin Pierce was three months over 48, and Arthur and Gar field were each a triflo less than 50. All the other presidents have been older, "William Henry Harrison, with his 63 years, being tho oldestof them all at taking the oath of office. ii i . - - - m Can a desert be rendered fertile and fruitful by putting a portion of it un der water? On the supposition that such a desirable result is attainable, the French are about to carry out the long-taiked of sjhemo of flooding that part of tho Sahara which is be low sea level, by means of a canal which will admit tho waters of the Mediterranean to the depressed basins of the great African desert, which are immediately south of tho French possessions of Tunis and Algeria. By this means it is expected to over flow about 9,000 square miles of sand and waste territory and create an inland sea very nearly a3 largo as our own Lake Erie. LeaveTbrt land for Mon I Tu. We.Thu. In tho desk part are a number of pigeon holes for papers, envelopes, etc., this is surmounted with beautiful bracket work, and on tho top of each side Is a white door. handsomely carved ; underneath Is a semi circie, aiso carvea in ncn uesigns, iniaia with gilt work.
