H hnntrht finQf. mous quantities of stocks1 during the railroad riots and when the disturb ances ended prices jumped up in a wjiy that added to hi3 "fortune faster then he could have hoped for. The terrible "squeeze"" he received in wheat marked the beginning of his downfall. He tried to "bull" wheat aud took 88,000,000 in cash to Chica go. He bought wheat, corn, pork, etc., and sour. wheat went up under his manipulation from less than SI to S1.39. Then it hroke and he bo Id out under 90 cents and every dollar of the S8,000,000 was gone. More wheat was offered than he had counted on. Farmers were ready to eat hay along with their live stock, to get SL25 or SL30 for their wheat and the stuff came from everywhere until Keene was deluged. Keene at the time, was "Jong" of the stock markot When speculators found out how much he had lost they pounced on the stock market and bore prices down. Keene's losses in Jersey Cen tral alone were S2,000,000. Iu the de cline that followed he kept going from bad to worse uu til at last he was obliged to quit. Keene is an Englishman. When he first came to this country he peddled milk somewhere up in the western part of the state. He afterwards taught school for a time and subse quently edited a newspaper in the Bed river country. He was a natural born gambler, and getting into San Francisco he commenced gambling in stocks in a small" way. "When the Comstock mine excitement was at its height he discovered that the ore had run out He raked and scraped to gether all he could and sold the stock short Then he circulated the news that the ore had given out. and the Comstocks dropped like a plummet. That was how he made all his money and how he came to bo known as a "bear," whereas afterward he was a "bull" for the most part In the Comstook operation he hurt Flood, O'Brien and Mackay, the California millionaires. He knew that if he stayed in California they would lay plans to "break' him and he came east with his newly acquired fortune. He is a great lover of poker and faro. Keene has been a bonanza for brok ers. L & S. Wormser, the well-known bankers and brokers, are said to have received Sl.500,000 in commissions from him. Samuel Boocock is said to have profited to the extent of a million. Frank Savin of Savin & Vanderhoef was paid S500.000 by Keene. It was a common thing for him to have S100.000 shares of stock standing in his name at once. When operating he chews up cigars by the dozen and walks about slashing the air with his cane. CuUIbe Glasd With ScUsure. Many persons may not be aware that glass can be cut under water with greatest ease, to almost any shape by simply using a pair of shears or strong scissors. In order to insure success two points must be attended to first and most important, the glass must be kept quite level in the water while the scissors are applied; and, secondly, to avoid risk, it is bet ter to begin the cutting by taking off small pieces at the corners and along the edges, and to reduce the shape gradually to that required, for if any attempt is made to cut the glas to the shape as we would a piece of cardboard, it will be most likely to break just where it is not wanted. Some kinds of glass cut much better than others; the softer glass is the best for this purpose. The scissors need not depend on the state of the edge presented to the glass. When the operation goes on well the glass breaks away from the scissors in small pieces in a straight line with the blades. This method of cutting glass has often been of service when a diamond has not been at hand, for cutting ovals and segments, and, though the edges are not as smooth as might be desired for some pur poses, it will answer in many cases The two hints given above, if strictly! followed, will always insure success. Mr. Henry Becker, 2Gi George St. Baltimore, Maryland, says that Miss Eliza Schall, living in his family, was completely cured of a severe chronic cough by one bottle of Bed Star Cough Cure, and experienced no bad effects and no return of the cough. Beblin, March 23. The Vossizhe Gazette says Bussia is devoting a large portion of her recent loans to improving her naval strength. Ten men-of-war are being constructed. Five of them are the largest types of war ships. Threo are plated cruisers and two torpedo rams. How He Got a Position. The parts bolt together, and to the ties, with a lag-screw, thus saving expense and providing greater safety. It saves power by the evenness of the track. Being bolted together and acting as one piece, the pounding at the joints is avoided, and lighter, less expensive rolling-stock may be em ployed. As it is hollow, telegraph and telephona wires may be laid in the rails, where they will be secured from wind and sleet storms which now so frequently interrupt tele graphic and telephonic communica tion. Provision can also be made for sigualing trains to stations along the way. It will be'next to impossi ble to break this hollow double rail. The saving of metal iu making this rail is estimated at from ten to fif teen tonH per mile. Xo fish-plates are used, as none are required. While the tubular is a new depart ure, and is untried, it has been sub mitted to the judgment of some of the best machinists iu this section, who express their entire approval of it Special to SI.
