A BIG BATTLE.
The English Whip the Arab.
Lokdok, March 20. General Gra
ham telegraphs as follews:
Hasheek, March 20, 3:30 p. m. -We
moved out from camp at G:15 this
morning, leaving the bhropshire regi
ment to guard it On reaching the
first hill at 820 a. m., we found the
enemy had retired and occupied an
other hill a mile and a quarter dis
tant. After a short halt the Berk
shire regiment and the marines were
ordered to clear the hill, the Indian
contingent and the guards support
ing. This was done very effectually,
the enemy being driven off the ridge
and streaming south towards Tamai,
where they were charged by squad
rons of thelndian lancers in the bush.
The cavalry then retired towards the
guards. Many of the enemy passed
the guards at the foot of the hill, and
made for a hill west of Hasheen.
These were shelled by the royal horse
artillery, while other parties moving
round our right were engaged in the
bush by fifty lancers.
Meanwhile a zareba, with four iu-
trenched posts on a hill commanding,
were being formed. The advauced
troops have all returned to this posi
tion, and will return to our camp,
leaving the East Surry regiment, with
two Krupp guns and four Gardners.
and water tanks and signal appliances
at the intrenched position.
Our killed are two officers, and two
men of the British, and five Sepoys.
The wounded are two officers and
twenty-six men of the British, aud
one officer and ten men of the Indian
contingent. The infantry behaved
with great steadiness. The number
of rebels is estimated at 4,000. The
rebel loss is not known, but was
heavy. The engagement lasted five
hours. The Arabs carried off all their
dead and wounded.
Natives report that numbers of Os
man Digma's men are deserting, hav
ing become disheartened. To-day's
fighting was noticeably of a different
character from that of any preceding
engagement The Arabs maintained
a steady rifle fire, retiring slowly from
each position held by them, and avoid
ing close quarters.
Suakem, March 20 The battle be
tween the British troops and Osman
Digina lasted five hours. The ma
rines were first sent to the front to
drive tho Arabs from the hills west
of Hasheen. As soon as possible they
were reinforced by batteries of Gard
ner and Krupp guns and by cavalry.
There was a hot engagement for a
few hours, during which the British
cavalry charged repeatedly upon the
Arabs, while machine guns were
worked with deadly effect whenever
their fire could be made available.
Great bravery was displayed on both
sides during the engagement. The
Arabs retreated slowly toward Tamai.
The Arab loss in killed and wounded
is estimated at GOO. The loss of the
British is forty. The Arabs displayed
desperate braver'. The marines
drove the Arabs from the hills, and
forced them to retire to tho plain.
Then the Indian troops charged tho
Arab position, but were outflanked,
and an unsuspected body of Arabs
succeeded in getting behind their
lines. The Indians found themselves
between two fires and fled. Darin g
their retreat they were closely pressed
by Arabs who hamstrung their horses
and speared the riders. The Bengal
ese fell back in confusion upon the
English infantry, and the guards, who
had been formed into a hollow
square, leisurely retired, while the
Arabs were yelling that they had re
gained their lost position. At this
juncture the artillery .came to the res
cue, and a brisk fire of small shot
from the machine guns and shells
from the Krupp field mortars drove
the Arabs from their positions.
The marines maintained steady fir
ing throughout the engagement, hut
the honors of the day are probably
due to the Irish lancers, who changed
tho tide of battle by a desperate
charge, and retrieved the fortunes of
General Graham's command when
they seemed almost hopeless. The
British troops have returned to their
former camp near Suakem.
Blood! Blood! Blood!
Yes, "blood! "Blood will t ell l" And
blood will tell a sorry tale, if it is
poor, mean sickly, impure blood,
with little or no iron in it The blood
enriched by iron and purified by the
vigorous action of a healthy liver,
tells its story of clear brain, vigorous
actions, good digestion and success
in life. Brown's Iron Bitters puts
iron in the blood, tones the nerves
and comquera debilty. Sold every

Artemas Ward. "When I see a rat

' SUITS KEEN THERE.
j Hkaduci (Tenn.). Feb. 19. The
j great religious wave now sweeping
iover this section recently struck
j Mohii3ville, a small village of this
i county. AmQiig The persons just
! converted was Miss Elizabeth Metz,
a respectable young woman of this
place. She was thrown into a tramv.
from which she did not recover for
over twenly-four hours. Her resi
dence has since been visited by hnu
dredfjfrom the country round about.
to whom she tells wonderful stories
of all she saw and heard while her
body remained on earth. It is claimed
that her soul took us upward flight
for a brief period into heaven, where
it was permitted to remain just long
enough to gaze upon all its glories.
She claims to have seen the face3 of
friends long since dead. The period
that she was in this state is a blank
to her. Miss Metz regrets that she
was not allowed to remain in this beau
tiful place, as she wonld sooner be
there than in this-pold, restless world.
She says that she rested in Abraham's
bosom; that all about her was filled
with millions upon millions of happy
beings, whose faces bore no traces of
sorrow or woe, but, on the other
hand, wore lit up with the most
beautiful and happy expressions. In
this etherial space she met friends
who had been dead for years, and
their only occupation seemed, to be
to sing sougs of praise and to play
upon their golden harps, bhe was
also permitted to gaze into an awful
black pit, which wnsiull of writhing
human beings, all in a seething fire,
whoso faces bore evidence of the
fearful pain they were undergoing.
She says that no one can now con
vince her that there is no hell, but
that, on the other hand, she believes
tliat there is such a place. Many
persons have been impressed bv the
story oflier brief sojourn in the up
per world.
The priucipal object seems to be to
breed a cow that is the best for milk,
butter and beef combined, which is
as hard a job a3 it is to breed a horse
for the draj", farm and race course all
in one. Some object to the Jersey
because she is too small to turn into
beef when she is too old" to milk.
Now, then, it is generally admitted
that the Jersey will make two pounds
of butter a week more than most of
the large breeds," if not all Allowing
such to be the case, which my ex e
rience teaches me it is, two pounds of
butter a week at 2. cents per pound
would be 50 cents a week for, say, the
first six months and one pound a
week for the next three months would
make it SlG.2o in a year; allowing
each to be milked ten years, would
make $102.50 in favor of the Jersey
for butter. At this age put lxth up
to fat aud the Jersey will dress 500
pounds and the larger Cow 800, mak
ing 300 pounds of beef to offset $162.
50 for butter, which makes pretty
dear beef, does it not? This is allow
ing it costs as much to keep a small
cow as a large one.

Parties from the San Juan islands
bring a curious story of the compli
cations growing out of the contest
filed by Dr. Jordan and his associates
against the lime quarries. The lands
are now held by parties under home
stead and timber land laws and many
of the quarries have been worked for
years, the owners supposing they had
clear title to their possessions. The
contestors allege a right to the lime
ledges uuder the mineral laws and
are confident of acquiring possession.
Pending the trial of the cause the
feeling is running high. The lime
men on the islands are said to have
banded themselves together for forci
ble resistance against any attempt to
oust them. They openly threaten to
shoot the first man who attempts to
take possession of any quarry, and it
is not improbable that thev would do
it.
Mr. John T. Bruce, Lexington, Ky..
says: For seven years 1 suffered
terribly with rheumatism in my

could not put my foot to the ground.
I tried nearly everything without re
lief, then made two or three applica
tions with St. Jacobs Oil, when the
pain was cured entirely aud has never
