3. M. RUNYON,
San Francisco.
The business of the interior de
partment pertains mainly to ques
tions and interests of. a western
character, and accordiug to a sort of
unwritten law, a western man, or u
man well posted in western matters,
has been placed in charge of it. as a
rule, ever since it was established.
But Cleveland proposes to demon
state that this theory is unreasonable
by giving us Lamar as secretary of
the interior, who never saw a western
state or territory in his life, and
knows nothtng about western people
beyond what he casually learned by
meeting them in battle during the 1
war of the reoelhon.
i
The fact that Lamar's boom for a j
place in the cabinet did not really '
take shape until after his declaration '
that Jeff Davis should not be called
a traitor in his presence without his "
'stern tin J emphatic denial," is a lit
tle curious, it must be confessed. I
Possibly the two things have no con-
other so closely that it ia difficult to
avoid taking tbrm both in at the same
glance.
New York, March 11. -The Times
sajs of the reduction of the white
hou3e ferce: "If the priueiple thus
defined in the white house is care
fully applied throughout the service,
not less than 20,000 men will be
stricken from the federal pay-rolls,
while the legitimate work of the ser
vice will be much better than before."
A Maryland wedding had to be
postponed because at the last mo
ment it was found that somebody had
stolen the marriage license. It ia
curious what chances some fellows do
have, even when it would seem as
though the last opportunity of escape
had passed.
