MAKING A NEW WRIST.
Some delicate surgical operations
have just bceu performed at Mr. Si-J
nai hospital in New York, for thej
purpose of forming a new Avrist for an
Italian boy of fourteen, whose aru i
had been terribly burned and had"
never healed. The muscles -were do
contracted that the hand stood at
right angli to the wrist, tho thumb'
and little linger being drawn in like
claws. Several unsuccessful attempts .
had been made to remedy the de-j
formity, aud a baud of cicatrical tis-'
sue formed a few inches above the ,
hand which contracted aud would !
have in time withered ihe hand nndj
removed the deformity. The sur-
;?eons opened the arm." cleaned the
wounds, restored the muscles to their j
natural position. Then they cut aw
strip about two inches wide and five j
iu(.-uu; tuiig iu me tipper part oi ine
boy's abdomen, raised the skin and
the tle-Ii to the depth o live-eighths
of an inch, leaving the ends attached,
and slipped the wounded wrist under.
The wound was then sewed up, the
skin and iiesh of the little linger,
which had been previously amputat
ed, being used to cover the exposed
parts of the wrist. The boy rallied,
in eij;ht days the alklominnl flap had
grown to the wrist, and in thirteen
clays the arm was released from its
confinment. This had provided ilesh
for only half tho injured wri3t, and
after a fortnight's rest a similar strip
Wto raided on the boy's thigh, the
wrist inserted as before and the nrm
bound down. The boy bore this sec
ond operation better "thau the first,
and in twelve Jays the flesh had at
tached itself to the wrist and the nnn
was released. One more operation
remains by which the fingers will bo
straightened.
