Feb. 13. l?Si Ed. Xirvs: This is the lowest settlement on t'ac Nehalem river and has abont Ui9 per sons exclusive of Indian, of whom there are but a few left. We have two postofficcs. Neh.'ilem and Onion Peak. Considerable mail matter finds its way to the Nehalem oHice m error, owiujr to renders failing to state the county. Forest Grove people can make a note of this, as most of it comes from their section. Ftoamnuitf that this part has often been described I will simply say that this i? the only settlement on the Nehalem river in Tillamook county. The people are engaged principally in dairying and stockraising on a small scale. Our chief drawback is having to ship our produce to and bring our supplies from, Tillamook bay, this river bar being as yet uusurveyed. It has been ordered, and last fall'Major Eastwick was in and made a preliminary exam ination, and when he left slated that in February (the present mouth) he would bring the steamer JJwoIn into Tillamook bay, watch his opportunity, run up here and survey the bar and river. We have some of the finest ' cedar, fir and spruce timber in the work"., easy of acc&ss, and men of means ready to build mills as soon as there is a way to get the lumber out.
