The most efficient machine for kill ing onr fellow-men yet invented appeara to be the 3Iaxim machine gun. a utensil winch any person can tun. wiiuuut uuucuiry into uattie, and hnving leveled it at his enemies and supplied it with a quantity of ammunition, need do nothing more than turn a crank once, and retire to a place of safety. The gnn then be gins shooting by itself, and continues to fire bullets at any rate desired, from two a minute to six hnndred. until its cartridge-belt, which con-l tains tnree hundred and thirty-three charges, is exhalsted. The "advan tages, to a warlike person, of beinir able to kill three hundred and thirty three persons at a single effort, with out exposing his own valuable person to injury, are so obvious that there is likely to be an extensive demand for the new instrument among Chris tian nations, and no one should fail to acquaint himself with the princi pies on which it acts. Every one knows something of the machine guns heretofore used--the Gatling gun, with its six barrels tied together by bands, and the crank at its rear, being, perhaps, the most familiar but all tho30 hitherto used differ from tho Maxim gun in employing a continued force from tho outside. generally applied to a crank or lever, to fire the charges, while the Maxim weapon loads and fires itself, after the first shot has been dis charged, by utilizing tho recoil of each discharge to effect the necessa ry movemenU; an ingenious system of springs and levers, operated by the barrel, which slides back about half an inch nt each explosion, extracting and throwing away the shell of tho cartridge just used, putting another in its place, pushing the barrel for ward again, cocking the hammer and pulling the trigger, and repeating the whole series of movements as the barrel slides back aerain bv the refcoil of the new discharge. With all its ingenuity and apparent complication, the new gnn seems from the tests to be substantial enough for active ser vice, and it is much to be hoped that the occasion for employing it will be rendered rarer by the verv fact that its efficiency will make it dreaded.
