S l Disgraceful Scenes Enacted i the Sonate G J Adjournment TaVcn UntitlO To-day. The house came to order immedi ately after joint convention dissolved and began consideration of regular business. Bogers got the floor and offered a woman, suffrage bill which wn3 voted down in short order, fieer, as soon as he could get the floor, jti troduced a resolution to adjourn sine die at midnight. It was adopted by a strict party vole, and on motion of Gilbert thehouse adjourned till 10 o'clock to-morrow. THE SBKATE. The senate reconvened at 11:30. After a little routine busiuess, Simon moved that the resolution adjourning the legislature at midnight Friday be rescinded. He immediately moved tho previous question. Bilyeu of Linn, rose to a point of order, and without stating tho point began talk ing. Weatherford, Dorns and others gathered around him. urging him to talk till 12 o'clock. It was then about fifteen minutes to 12. Simon resnectfnllv demanded the previous question-butBilyen went on. ThenDorris, "Weatborford and My ers, each on his own account and in the loudest tones, began a chorus of tirade on what they termed an out rage on justice. Simon had out witted them and their anger scarce knew bounds. In the meantime, while the four were shouting maledic tions and threatening the pres ident, the lobby filled rap idly, and it took the strongest ex ertions from Chief of Police Parrish, who happened to be present, and others, to prevent the crowd from rushing in. The Democrats in the orowd joined in the yells, and for fivo minutes riot was run loose. The noise halted for a second when a mes sage from the house came in announc ing that the house had rescinded tho adjournment resolution. Then the chorus of abuse broke out again from the same four. Of course the mes sage took precedence over all other business, and bimon moved its adop tion. The chair put the motion, aud in response to the vote decided it car ried. This so enraged Bilyeu that he rushed at Simon end reached in his hip pocket as ho advanced. lie Avas caughtbythe 3ergeant-at-arms and members, who restrained him. When it is considered that- Bilyeir-iff a six footer; and Simon n small man, the act was cowardly as well as out rageous. Simon maintained a dig nified bearing. "Weatherford and Myers then raised a point of order that a joint resolu tion adopted by an aye and no vote could not be rescinded upon a vive voce vote and on the further ground that a motion to reconsider required a iormat notice in auvance. Myers and "Weatherford spoke on this ones tion, crowding with other members about the president's desk. Myers charged the president," upon his 'oath as a senator, and his honor as a mau, not to commit what he termed the greatest political outrage in the his tory of the American nation. Weath erford followed in the same strain Both were entirely enraged. In the meantime the crowd rushed about the speakers, who stood within arm's length of the president. Hirsch stood silent beside Myers while he spoke. The scene in the lobby and on the floor was one of passion and confusion. Cheers and hisses filled the air, and it seemed for a time as if a free fight were inevitable. When Weatherford concluded Si mon was recognized by the president and ottered a concurrent resolution to adjourn till 10 to-day, which was adopted, and the senate adjourned. It should be explained that when the president put the motion to re scind the resolution no call was made by the Democrats or by anybody else for ayes and nays. It then lacked fifteen minutes of midnight, the hour nxed by the resolution for adjourn ment, and there "was abundant time to Lave called the roll twice. In stead of demanding a fair vote on the motion to rescind they ononlv and loudly urged Bilyeu to hold the floor till the clock should strike mid night As to their protest on the ground of notice not havinir been given, it ought to be understood that while the stnotletter of parliamentary law demands such notice, it has been the uniform usage in both braches of the legislature to reconsider without notice. Practice has criven thiansaca the authority of the fixed rule of pro- ueeuiug. vicyuiiuiii, zi. The Child's Teeth. Teeth are troublesome things, both in coming and going. Thousands of children die in teething. Mr. J. H. Wicker, of Montezuma, Ga., writes, "Last spring, Brown's Iron Bitters saved tho life of my little eighteen-month-old girl, who was teething." Some people have an idea that this medicine is only for grown-up people, bnt it is just as valuable for little folks. It gives them health and strength, and brings the roses to many a puny child's cheek. The Nevada gold-seekers have dis coverd a new use for fowls. It is a common sight there to see men and women carrying a hen under one arm and a basket of chickens under the other. When they reach their desti nation the hens are picketed, and, being already hnngry, being to scratch and eat After three or four days' honest toil they are killed and their craws examined for gold, as much as $8 has been found in one craw. A PORTRAIT OF THE 3IAIIIM. Imagino a man about forty years of age of medium height, as 'lean, as the saying is, as shotten herring, with a mahogany complexion, coal black beard nnd eyes, and three verti cal slashes on his pallid cheeks: add to this a long cotton shirt as a gar ment, a narrow turban as a headdress, a pair of wooden sandals, and in the hands -drv as those of a mnmmv -a string of ninety beads, corresponding' iu tin i'4U(u uuuiucr ui uiviiiu attri butes, and you have the Mahdi. Those who have seen h m say that Mohammed-Ahnied plays to perfec tion the part of a visionary dervish, waviug his head when walking, and murmuring constant prayers, his eyes fixed on heaven. His father was a carpenter on Nnft Island, in the Nubi-j an province of JJongoIa, and about! 1852 came, with his four children, to Chindi, a small city on' the banks of! the Nile south of Berber. When still I very young he was placed as an tip- prentice under the care of one of his uncles, a shipbuilder, of Chabakah. opposite Sennarr. It seems that the future prophet was not without his failings, for one day his uncle thought well of flogging him in a regular French style. The proceeding was not appreciated, and the child ran away until he arrived in Khartoum, where he entered a sort of school or oonvent of begging dervishes, who were in charge of the monument erected over the venerated remains of Shiek Hoghali, patron of tho city. There his life was a remarkable one for his piety; but as to education, he never learned how to write or even I how to read fluently. Later he went I to a similar institution in Berber,) then to one in Arndup. on the south : of Kena. Iu 1878 he had become so wealthy that he felt the necessity to declare that Allah had ordered him to leave his silo aud to take unto him self a large collection of wives, whom, as a truly practical man, he chose among the most influential families of the country, especially that of the Bagaras, the most opulent slave trad ers on the White Nile. Every one has still fresh in his memory the appalling extermination of Hicks Pasha's 11,000 men, sur rounded on tho 5th day of November, 18S3 the first day of the fourteenth century of the Hegira! at Kasghil while marching on El Obeid. This horrible butchery, happening on the threshold of the century, announced as the-one of the last prophet, gave a Dioouy consecration to lohammed Ahmed, who, after the three davs battle, went all over the battlefield, piercing with his spear the chastlv corpses of his enemies and exclaim ing: "It is I, I, the Prophet, who de stroyed the heretics f Compared to him, Mohammed was no more, in his mind, than a small prophet He alone was the only great and power ful Messiah announced by Mohammed himself. Tho sultan of Constanti nople was no more the supremo Caliph, the chief of Islamism: it was he, Mohammed-Ahmed, and he or dered his own name to be invoked in public worship in the place of Mo hammed's, right after the name of Allah! I have said enough to show what kind of a man is the Nubian Mahdi. Alfred M. Cotte, LL.D., In the uaiioiic worm. Mr. W. H. Mathieson.
