Ukc At the annual mealing of the One bee geographical society, bold on the will of January, a paper was reml v Mr. Bignell, laud surveyor, throwing additional light upou the mysterious inland sea visited by him last sum mer in Kupert's Land, and kuovn as Lake Mistassini. Foam Bay or the most northwesterly of the two great arms into which the nearest portion of the lake is divided by a long nar row peninsula, is about three hun dred miles from Luke St. John and the St. Lawrence. The ouly settle ment of any kind found by him in the vicinity was the Hudson Bay company's iost, a small station in charge of the factor or trader, WH liam Miller, whose father accom panied one of the early expeditions sent, in search of Sir John Franklin. The half dozen buildings comprising the station arc surrounded by no stockade of any kind, a fact which speaks for the friendly disposition of the neighboring Indians. These are of the Montaguaix tribe, who to the number of thirty-five or forty fami lies, reside in the vicinity of the post and subsist upon the wild fowl and fish of the lake. Iu the autumn they leave for the woods on thoir annual hunting and trapping expeditions. They are reported to be tolerably free from.crime, though an occasional murder occurs among them; bnt their habits are of the most filthy descrip tion. They are nominally Christian, and are visited once a year bv a cler gyman from Hudson Bay. They still hold, however, to a number of hea thenish traditions, and their medi cine men and magicians still exercise over them a very great control. These Indians would appear, how ever, to be much less superstitious than some others whose camping grounds were seen by Mr. Bignell aoove .uai;e buipsnaw. mere is an other small lake near the last men tioned, for which some Indian tribes have the most profound veneration. On its shores the explorer found an Indian burying ground, where in the shape of offerings to the departed dead, the skulls of bears, beavers, ot ters aud caribou hang from the branches of the neighboring trees, and the graves of the dead warriors are strewn with relics of the chase, in the shape of the weapons, the cauoes aud paddles the clothingnd. even thotocaoIandmatchTs which be longed 10 mem in me. une ol tne most remarkable features of this vir tually ttuknown country is noted by Mr. Bignell in connection with the height of land already referred to by him, and which forms the boundary between thaprovince of Quebec and Rupert's Land. Though, as men tioned above, it divides the rivers flowing south from those emptying themselves into Hudson Bay, it is no where more than six to eight feet in height, and sometimes much less. Iu fact Mr. Bignell found it at times most difficult to trace it at all, aud it is said that one lake is so situated that it has two outlets, one toward the St. Lawrence, the other toward Hudson Bay. The climate is reported less severe than the latitude of the lake would lead one to suppose. In 18S3 the ice first took on the lake was on the 4th of November, but the main body was not frozen over until the middle of January. The ice broke up in 18S1 on the 22d of May, but did not en tirely disappear until the 8th of June. Excellent potatoes and other roots are raised at the post, and it is be lived that oats would ripen, though they have never been tried. The flora shows little difference from that im mediately adjoining the height of land on the other side. One of the most esteemed plants in this region is the Ilona ceniu Jlornura, the root of which is said to be a complete specific in cases of small-pox. The Indians of the vicinity have never known it to fail, and its use also prevented the pitting of the skin, which is frequently ono of the most dreaded results of the disease. The ground is covered bv what is known as the sub-arctic for est, consisting principally of canoe birch, or bouleau, tamarac, poplar, balsam and spruce, but no pine. There would appear to be little mer chantable timber, most of the trees averaging seven to oight luuuub iu mummer, inougn a lew run to twenty-two inches. Mr. Bignell considers the soil well suited for agricultural purposes, and saw sumcient of it himself for the forma tion of at least a dozen parishes. The auimais in me vicinity ot tuo lake are the caribou, moose, bear, lynx, wolf, wolverine, otter, mink, weasel, hare, red, black, white, silver and cross foxes, and black bears of unusual size and ferocity. No new light will be cast upon the actual extent and configuration ot Lake Mi6tassini until the return of the expedition now engaged in its sur vey. Mr. Bignell ascended it for 120 miles without reaching the main body. Just as in the case ot Lake Superior, however, the turbulence ot its waves frequently gives warning twelve to fourteen hours in advance of ap proaching storms. In the o'pinion of Mr. Bignell, the immense body of water is an expansion of the Rupert river, just as the great American and Canadian lakes are of the St. Lawrence.- N. r. Telegram. Lokdon, Feb. 19. Mrs. James Bus sell Lowell died at 2 o'clock this after noon. PACIFIC yOKFFITl'UE BILL. Yashx-gto:.
