ASTORIA, OREGON:
WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 11, 1685
AMERICAS WOODEN SHIPS VER
SUS ENGLISH IRON.
Under tbe above caption, a recent
number of the Boston Journal gives
tbe follewing: Senator Beck of Ken
tucky, a state where ships of any kind
are never seen, took it upon himself
in a recent speech to speak of En
glish iron ships as fine sailing ships,
and American as "miserable old
wooden sailing crafts." It is very ev
ident that tbe Kentucky senator was
speaking upon a subject of which he
bad little knowledge, and therefore
the sentiment of patriotism, if noth
ing else, should have restrained him
from indulging in a fling at our snip
ing interest Undoubtedly the best,
and in fact about the only chance we
have to compare the respective merits
of American and English ships, is
that afforded in the grain trade
of tbe Pacific coast from San
Francisco. An elaborate state
ment, covering two years' export of
grain from San Francisco to Eng
land, employing 237 American wooden
ships, 14fi English wood and 414 Eng
lish iron ships, has been prepared,
and a careful camparison of tbe
operations of thip immense fleet
shows that in all respects the Ameri
can arc superior to British of either
wood or iron construction. As re
garded speed, capacity per ton, safety
while at sea, both as to life and prop
erty, the much vaunted British iron
ships do not come up to Senator
Beck's maligned American wooden
sailing ships. In fact, comparing the
losses and detentions resulting froni
the operation of tbe American wooden
ships with British iron ships in the
traffic in 1SS2 and 18S3, it was worth
GS per cont. more to insuro the iron
than the wooden fleet. So for as
freight rates were concerned the
Britiph onjoyed the advantage, owing
to tbe fact thai the Eiglish Lloyds
and English merchants discriminate
in favor of their own shipping.
SrsAKEit Carlisle said the other
day that he believed the time would
come when the form of an oath would
be done away with in the courts.
This expression of opinion was
brought out in a general conversa
tion upon the subject of tbe rejection
of the testimony of an agnostic in
the Swain courtmartial. Mr. Carlisle
said that under the present methods
of taking testimony, the evidence of
a worthless character who took the
oath, would be taken against that of
the most scrupulous and high-minded
man, who, from his very senae of
truth, could not say that he knew
there was a God. He thinks that
there never was a case tried in any
court where there was not perjury of
some kind on both sides. He never
yet has, in all his legal exporience,
seen evidence that the oath alone
restrains a man from making mis
statements in his own interests. Ho
would have each man give evidence
without any preliminary form, and
then it would stand according to the
character of tbe witness. Each -witness
would be upon his honor. There
would be no trouble in providing
penalties for giving false evidence as
there now is.
Hot Springs, Ark., has become a
no-license -town for two years in a
curious way. There is a statute that
at each state election, the question of
license shall be submitted to tbe bal
lot. If a majority of the voters bo
not for licenses, then it is unlawful
for tho county court to grant them.
.At tho last election the question was
overlooked inadvertently. It was
taken for granted that by common
consent license would be voted. Tho
returns showed three ballots in the
county against license, and none for.
Thus the anomaly of three votes
closing all the saloons in the county
for two years aud thwarting the will
of thousands is presented. There
wero thirty saloons in Hot Springs,
which paid a revenue of 32,000 to
the county and city. The matter was
taken before the courts, but the saloon-keepers
were defeated and they
must suspend business for the next
two years.
Gov. McDanieii of Georgia, is troub
led by a complicated case, in which
tho intervention of the courts may
become necessary. In the elections
for tho county and othor local offices,
commissions had to be signed for
nearly two thousand persons. Owing
to the misplacement of papers in the
executive office, many of these com
miesions have been sent to the de
feated candidates. In only one in
stance, however, has the recipient of
such commission refused to rectify the
error. ATcArthur of Eastman was
defeated in the race for a local judge
ship, but was commissioned by
error. He now refuses to surrender
his commission, which is for four

To-day. takes place the closing act
in the election of Grover Cleveland
as president of the United States.
Tho people voted on the 4th of No
vember and elected tho electors who
met in their respective state capitals
on the 3rd of December and voted
for their party candidates, tho votes
going on by mail and messenger to
Washington. At noon to-day the
president of tho senate in the pres
ence of both houses of congress opens
the certificates, counts the votes and
announces who is elected president
and vice president of the nation for
the four years from the 4th of next
month.
The bill introduced by Holman in
congress last Friday to protect the
purity of the ballot, provides that ev
ery person hereafter elected or ap
pointed to fill any office of the United
States shall take and subscribe to tho
following eath: "I do solemnly swear
(or affirm) that I have not, directly
or indirectly, given, promised or ad
vanced to be paid any money, or giv
en or conveyed any money, or given
or convoyed any other article of value
to any person or persons to assist,
aid or procure my election or appoint
ment. According to a story published by

author of the "Spoopendyko papers,"

er was adopted somo years ago by
Little Knife, tho hereditary chief of
tho Tetons, lately deceased.
Undismayed by the failure of tho
tremendous storm that he predicted
for Decembor, but which did not
come off at that time, Wiggins is now
reported to have set. the 17th-19lh of
next month for the performance. It
is to be a sort of tornado-blizzard-typhoon-hurricane-cyclono
arrange
ment. The Danish nation has something
over 2,000,000 people; an annual rev
enue of $19,000,000; ran $1,000,000
behind the estimates last year, and
now proposes to construct two tor
pedo boats at an expense of $6,000,
000 and to erect fortifications at a
further cost of $10,500,000.
One of the trans-Atlantic steam
ship lines is about to issue tickets to
entitle passengers to merely lodging
and conveyance, meals to be charged
at the end of tho voyage. This is a
concession to passengers susceptible
to sea-sickness.

terms.

government is wanted sufficient to
cover this amount.
