Three battalions or. guards ana lour battalions or in fan try, including two from Malta and two from Gibraltar, have been ordered to .Lgvpt. Two battalions of iniantry and a regiment of cavalry bavo been ordered to proceed from India tu Egypt. The nine battalions of troops ordered from England, Malta, Gib raltar and India are sent at tbe re quest of Wolseley. Tbe guards leave Jbngiand at tbe end of the present week. Two battalions of English in fantry, nt present in lower Egypt, will proceed immediately to tho Soudan. It is stated that all the forces com prised within the nine battalions to be sent to Lord Wolseley will, after reaching Saukem, operate between Saukem and Berber, with the object of securing the routo between those points, and then effecting a complete junction with the British on tho Nile, both above and below Berber. Great activity prevails at Chntham, Woolwich and Aldershot, prepara tions for sending reinforcements to Egypt being rabidly pushed. The Twentieth hussars and the Third bat talion of ths rifle brigade, now at Alderahot, a battalion of the Scots fusiliers, a battalion of the Cold stream guards, aud a squadron of the Fifth lanoers, haTO been ordered to proceed at ence to Saukem. Three thousand reinforcements, at the urgent demand of Lord WTolseley, have been ordorcd to proceed as rap idly as possible to Egypt, to open tho road between Saukem and Berber. A naval demonstration on the Bei sea, to co-operate witlrthe land move ment, has been arranged. Tho gov ernment will dispatch several British men-of-war to that locality. The number of reinforcements already or dered to Egypt is 8,000. The war de partment has completed preparations for the transport of commissary and ordnance service. Vessels are al ready loading with stores at Wool wich. Lord Wolseley tolograpks the war office ts-day from Korti, as follews: "The advance guard of General Earl's column, consisting of a squadron of cavalry under command of Colonol Butler, surprised a large body of tho j Monassir tribe, undsr Waugam, mur derer of Colonel Stewart, encamped at Shakoob wolls. Tho cavalry charged the encampment, and the en emy tied in every direction, leaving behind thirty men killed, a large number of camels and oattle, and many Bemington rifles. Colonel Butler captured six prisoners. It is understood tho government has reoeiTed word that Colonel Wil son, who, aftor failing to reach Khar toum, was stranded with his entire party on an island in the Nile, is safe. The opinion prevails at tho war of fice that General Gordon is still alive, and engaged in defending himself is some inaccessible part of tho oity of Khartoum, where he had prepared refuge for use in emergency. The Grenadier guards hare been ordered to hold themselves in readi ness for foreign sorvico. It is understood orders woro given te-day for the dispatch of 10,000 troops for the Soudan. The Pall Mall Gazette this after noon states that the cabinet bus de cided that the defeat of EI Mahdi is necessary to vindicate England. No immediate advance on Khartoum is considered possible or will be at tempted, tho Gazette says, unless it is found there is good reason for believ ing that General Gordon, is still hold ing oat with a handful of followers in tho mission house in Khartoum, where it is reported he took refuge when tho city fell into El Mahdi's hands. In the absence of this, Lord Wolseley, it is said, will probably continue to advance by the river until he reaches Berbor, where ho will spend tho hot weather of summer wifh his army, and wait for the Sep tember nse of the Nile before advanc ing. Two months must elapse be fore there can bo any advance in force from Saukem. The Canadians who are earnestly sounding tho priases of Hudson's hay as an outlet for the products of the Dominion-will get hut cold comfort from the latest news from that re gion. One of the finest vessels of the Hudson bay company, with a car go worth $250,000 and under the care of one of the most skillful captains in the service, was bjocked by ice in the first days of October, and has been unable to either get out or find shelter. A few of her crew succeeded in reaching a fort thirty miles away, but three well-equipped expeditions have since failed to reach the vessel, and the men may starve. Tho fact is, Hudson's bay is safe for navigation only a very brief period in each year, and some well-informed voyagers even think it can never be relied up on. Head Boned Down. So go the victims of debility nnd languor, barely able to put one foot before the other. No lieart to work. No good cheer for the present No Jiope for the future. Brown's Iron Bitters builds up the system; enriches blood; sets liver at work; regulates heart; strengthens stomach; tones nerves. Then you are all right. Mr. John S. Kager, Walterboro. S. O., says, "I used Brown's Iron Bitters for nerv ons debility, and found it very bene ficial." i Ml Poultry farming is now declared to be the most profitable department of husbandry in Englandr"" DK LKSSKPS AND HIS WORK. Many years ago Meuemei Ali said to Ferdinand de Lessep: "If yon ev er have any great thing to do. lo it . alone; when there aue wo persons,' thcro is ahvajs one loo many.' Had! DeLesse s noi followed liiis advice,; it is pnbable ho would not havej been so successful in the great un dertakings of his life. Against his two gro it enterprises there has r.rison; un opposition so fierce aud stro.i that the second man at their hea ( would have to be another Do Lesseps to remain unmoveu. uut the man who cut the Suez canal, and who is now cutting the canal across the isth mus of Fauama, stands alone. His is the spirit of all those who perform apparent impossibilities, and his faith tains. However savage tho attacks J against his great undertaking,, he never "fails to reply calmly and confidently, "Messieurs, the Panama I canal will be opened to commerce in j 1883." Now and then some faet is brought to light which shows that ho is not indulging in happy visions, but is engaged in work. Dingier, tho distinguished engineer in charge, who has just lost nearly all if not his entire family, whioh was with him upon the isthmus, writes to De Les seps, after his great loss, that he 13 moro than ever attached to the enter prise, which remains the sole object of life and the consolation of grief. Miles, one of tho mem bers of the Swaim court-martial, is ono of the yonngest brigadier-generals in the army. Ho has had a most remarkable military record. The close of tho war of the rebellion found him nt the ago of twenty-five a major- general. Unster was tho only other boy-general who wa3 younger than Miles, and Cuater was only two months younger. Ho is still a young man. He is only forty-four years of age, and has been a brigadier-ceneral in the regular service since 1SS0, and is in command of the department of tno extreme northwest. Ho is a very soldierly looking man. He is slightly above medium height, with a round, well-filled-out figure. His head is large, while every feature of his face indicates decision and character. There is not a weak lino in it. His forehead is broad and high. His nose is a fierce Bomau hook, under neath which is a long drooping mili tary mustache. The rest of his face is smooth shaven, with tho exception of one inch of beard in front of each ear. He is what might be called a dark blond, His complexion is as fresh as that of an Englishman. Tho expression of frankness and manli ness upon his face makes friends for him at once. He goes nowhere with out making a pleasant impression. He is happily married and is devoted to his family. His wife is a nieco of General Sherman and a sister of Mrs. Don Cameron. General Miles is pas sionately foEd of military science. He has mado a specialty of the study of our coast defenses.
