A romance of the late war was revived in the polico court here to-dny. The story as lold in the Evening Mail is substantially as follews: One day in the spring of 18G5, when Gen Judson Kilpatrick's army was marchincr through bouth Carolina, an unusually engaging' and pretty little woman came to the road side and inquired for the general, when ho reached the point where she was. bhe said she was a school teach er from Vermont, stranded by the fate of war, nnd asked the privilege of moving with the army. She was put into an ambulance and subse quently occupied a family carriage 'foraged ' by the soldiers on the route. Ono day there was a new officer upon the general's staff. He was a boyish- looking fellow and his face had never yet needed a razor. He set on his horse rather awkwardly at first, and even after many days he was unable to arrive at the easy gait of a veteran cavalryman. "Who is that young fel low?" would bo the question along the ranks as the staff would sweep by on gallop. "That's Captain Charley," would be the reply, with a wink. When the truth was known some men sneered, others bit their lips and all agreed it might have been expected. At any rate it was no man's particu lar business. 'Captain Charley" rode with Kil- patnek through the Carounas. One day there ivas a stubborn fight, in wluch one regiment got separated from the main body. It was neces cary that orders be sent it Nobody cared to go, for the valley between was swept with grape, canister and shells, but "Captain Charley's" black eyes -were blazing. Turning to Kil patrick, he said: "Let me go, gen oral." "Go then; take the low ground thero is in the hollow and ride like " All watched the dapple-gray as hespun along the unused wagon road in the hollow. The redoubled roar of the artillery and the sharp snap of rifles told that it was no sum mer show through which "Captain Charley'' was riding. The rider dis appeared and the cessation of firing bv the detached recrirnent told that the order had been delivered. Then i came the regiment sweeping aloug upon the main road and a cleared field, their sabers flashing in the sun. "Captain Charley" essayed to come back and join his chief. Just at the moment when the aide-de-camp reached the last elevation in the perilous path, an enormous shell ex ploded, seeminglj' over his head. "Captain Charley" fell to the earth, but the well-trained and faithful horse stood fast. Half a dozen of the escort that now came up, without orders, rushed down the hill, picked upjthe unconscious body and con veyed it to a place of safety, where the brigade surgeon said no bones were broken, but that "Captain Char ley" would never again hear the voices of loved ones. He was incurably deaf from the concussion. The sur geon also indulged in some multer ings concerning a general who would allow a woman to ride with, his staff officers. The woman -"Captain Charley" had seen the last of the war. A "few days in the hospital restored her to health, but her deafness prevented her making a living at her former oc cupation. She descended into the slums of Washington and New York and lastly to Chicago. Dissipation made her an old woman before her time. She was arraigned in the po lice court to-day for being drunk and disorderly and was sent to tho house of correction. True Source of the 3IIsKippI. Copt Willard Glazier, of the United States navy, has communicated to tho English royal geographical society his discovery of the true source of the Mississippi. This has long been a vexed question, and in June. 1831, CapL Glazier organized and led an expedition with the object of finally settling the matter. The expedition proceeded in canoes via Leech lake to Lake Itasca, and, accompanied by an old Indian guide, pushed forward to the south; and the Captain was re warded by the discovery of another lake of considerable size, which proved to be, without a shadow of a doubt, the true source of the Mississip pi It is in latitude 47 13' 25' ', and the lake is three feet above Lake Itasca, the hitherto supposed source of the river. The Mississippi may, there fore, be said to originate in an alti tude 1,578 feet above tho Atlantic ocean, and its length, taking former data for a basis, may be placed at 3, 184miles. The tract of country in which the river originates is a remote and unfrequented region. Saason of Old Was a powerful man, and must have had a god deal of iron in his blood. We do not want to be quite as strong as Samson, nor so mischievous. But we all want vigor and strength; and we cannot have these unless the bleod has its full quota of iron. There is no preparation of iron like that in Brown's Iron Bitters. Mr. W. J. Jones, Manchester, Va., says, 'I took it for poor appetite and general weak ness, and found it a good tonic." A condemned murderer at Marshall, Texas, passed his hat around the court-room for the benefit of his wife and six children. CHILDREN AT TABLE. Never let your children come to the table until you are quite sure that they won't undertake to do all the talking. This you should make a law when you have comp-iiy. Tell the company there isn't room for them. Yon are never safe with the children at the table. If there is any thing you don't want known it will be told them. The boy who never noticed that the spoons were plated will shout, as though giving you in in in formateon: "Oh, see the gold coming through the spoons f And that same boy will say he wishes it was Sunday, "and when "your guests ask him why, "he will reply: "Because we nlwavs have pie Sun day." You will find out he knows a great deal you never snspected ho kuew. and you will bo at a loss to know how he ever equipped himself with the facts. A boy at the table is a woll- spring of displeasure. If his sister is kissed by any one he is always the person to witness the perormance, and tells of it at the table before a crowd. He is always the one to give to the world the fact that his sister uses powder, weara false teeth, nnd is thirty-two years old. If there is a mortgage on the place the boy hears you speak of it, and then goes around talking about ita3 though it were something to be pointed to with pride anu pleasure. .LiVerything yon sav in the bosom of your family that should not be repeated, the boy repeats, and he always has the faculty of repeat ing it at the wrong time and to the wrong person. If you say the clergyman's sermons are too long or too dry, the boy will take it all in, and say nothing until the clergyman comes around to mako his regular visit, and then he will let it out just after yon have entered the room. If you say tho doctor is not nt to cure hams, he will jump un on the doctor's knee, when he calls, and cunningly say: "Oh, doctor, mamma says you ain't fit to cure hams!" The old adage that boys will bo boys ought to be changed that boy3 will be fiends. One bov is more bother than half a dozen girls. The boy is always in mischief. When he is at school he is studying up some kind of deviltry to perpetrate when school is out. Or else he is playing tricks on the teacher, when he is at homo ho is twisting the cat's tail, or aisiurumg ner neartnsione dreams with a beau shooter. If thero is no cat to torment, he will torment his little sister by makiug faces nt her or dressing the dog up in her doll's clothes. Volume 1, No. 1, of a tiny sheet with tho startling title of the Last AiigeTs Trnmjyet-CaU is the most recent addition to our nineteenth century journalism. It hails from Los Angeles and announces to whom it may concern that "the Christian era is fulfilled and terminatos on Sep tember 30, 1835," at which lime com mences the millennium, or the era of liberty. The editor is very frank in his remarks about tho fate of thoso who believe differently from himself, and who, it seems, some time ago had him taken to Stockton. Ho leaves no hope whatever for ordinary, every day sinners. You Can Have It. "My dear, what would I give to have your hair?" is often said by middle-aged ladies to young ones Madam, you mny have just such hair. Parker's Hair Balsam will give it to you. It will stop your hair from fall ing off, restore the original color and make it long, thick, soft and glossy. You need not stand helplessly envying the girls. The Balsm is not oily, not a dye, bnt it an elegant dressing, and is especially recommended for its clean liness and purity. "If your neighbor believes not as you believe, it is a proof that you believe not as he believes; and what earthly power shall determine between you"? If every denomination is left to judge of its own religion there is no relig ion that is wrong; but if they are to judge of each other's religiou, there is none that is right."
